WAS THE MAYOL-NINO RESULT DONE TO PLEASE GUADALAJARA? PhilBoxing.com Mon, 01 Mar 2010  Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico -- After viewing the replays, in real time speed and slow motion at a bar near our hotel, I am more inclined to say that the decision given to settle the Mayol-Nino controversy was merely to please Guadalajara. Even the locals thought that the technical draw was wrong. “We want a Mexican to win but not this way,” a patron next to our table said. The boxing authorities and the WBC who overruled the referee should have declared a “disqualification” instead of ruling that the fight is a technical draw. Perhaps a review is warranted as all the evidences pointed to that fact. The replays clearly indicate that immediately after Mayol reacted to the low blow, or should I say very low blow and started to turn away as he heard the referee’s order. But Nino clearly and intentionally threw a vicious left that landed flushed on the chin of the unsuspecting Mayol. Before that, he stepped on the foot of Mayol to prevent him from moving away. In my view, the very low blow was intentional and so was the follow-up left that came after it. It was a clearly a devilish act meant to hurt Mayol. In fact, there were other low blows prior to the last one that really hurt Mayol. It was an act of desperation following the beating Nino got in round 2. The final blow came after the referee clearly shouted “stop” and tried to grab Nino. Vic Drakulich, the referee was a tad too slow and that resulted to the illegal blow being delivered. But that is minor compared to his decision to give a ten-count knowing that the blow was illegal and delivered after his order was ignored. The ten-count should not have been done and the initial declaration that the fight was a TKO was wrong! On top of that, Drakulich should have immediately disqualified Nino much like what the referee of the Bernabe Concepcion-Steven Luevano did when the former delivered a blow after the bell has sounded.
