The Whole Tooth and Nothing But ...

THE FUTURE SARANGANI HOSPITAL MUST INCLUDE A DENTAL DIVISION

To begin with, I would like to congratulate the Honorable Manny Pacquiao for his recent political triumph His victory can only be described in one word:- awesome!

Beating the ultra-rich and iconic Chiongbian clan is no laughing matter. In fact, it is history- setting, one that sets an example of how goals can be attained if there is a clear vision, focus, determination and public support. The availability of large resources would not hurt either.

Congressman Pacquiao?s declared priority of building a hospital in Sarangani is laudable. It must be supported by all sectors since it will be good for the people in the congressional district.

However, a thorough project study must be done particularly on matters concerning operational cost after the building is up and running.

This issue is important so as to maintain a viable staff dedicated to the cause. Surely, the Congressman must not be expected to constantly fund it with his personal funds. And, the ?pork barrel? can not be expected to perpetually fund it. There are other congressional projects besides the hospital.

A tax base must therefore be created to assure that the hospital will flourish. Creating a ?sliding-scale fees? as a basis for its income will help as well. In so doing, the rich pay more than the poor.

I hope that who ever Congressman Pacquiao assigns to oversee the building and eventually run of the hospital is a person who has a professional background far sufficient to understand what it takes to built and operate a world class health facility.

Definitely, someone with far better credentials than his ?boxing adviser? who also doubles as a ?buffer? against people the Congressman must say ?no? to.

Being a dentist, I would hope that a Dental Division headed by a local licensed dentist be made part and parcel of the hospital. The Dental Division must be an independent entity, not a wishy-washy sector of some major division in the hospital.

It is only by being separate and free to make administrative decisions can a dental division in a hospital do well.

It would not hurt if the Congressman?s staff consult with the local chapter of the Philippine Dental Association who I am sure will be more than glad to join hands with their new Congressman to help his vision for better health care for his constituents come true.

But without dental health care that vision will not be complete.
