RODEL MAYOL ON ?KABABAYAN LA? TV SHOW

Reigning WBC World Junior Lightweight Champion Rodel Mayol will take a break from his training on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 to appear as a guest of the gorgeous Janelle So on her daily TV talk show, Kababayan LA on Ch. 18 in Los Angeles.

Mayol?s coming appearance on TV indicates his desire to help the best way he can to hype his title defense against Omar Nino Romero, the Mexican challenger from Guadalajara, Mexico.

?I am aware that the fight is in Mexico and many Pinoys may not get to see it live, but still it is my responsibility to advertise it. As the champion, I must help the promoters from Mexico (Zanfer Promotions) the best way I can. That is part of my responsibility.? Mayol stated.

?In addition, boxing fans must be made aware that there are other Filipino world champions out there, and if my appearance on LA television will help spread that fact for the good of everyone, so much the better,? he added.

In spite of being the champion, Mayol will travel to Mexico again, this time to the City Queretaro, to defend his title and fight in front of the ?challenger?s hometown crowd? because no one in the Philippines, including the ?big name promoters? had interest or rather, the boldness to take a gamble and promote a Filipino champion?s fight in the Philippines.

I wonder what ever happened to national pride? I guess the almighty Pesos swept it over, huh?

Pity.

Could it be because Mayol fights in the lighter weight division which allegedly does not draw enough revenue compared to fights in the higher weights?

Or could it be perhaps something else? Your guess is as good as mine.

Filipino promoters had a chance to put together the WBC mandated re-match with Nino after the controversial ?technical draw? handed down by Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC Vice President who supervised the first fight between Mayol and Nino at Guadalajara, Mexico.

But for some reason they did not even make an offer to do it.

Not even a meaningless one!

In fact, everyone kept silent.

Surely, the Mayol-Nino rematch has a value if shown on TV even on a delayed basis.

Therefore, I would not be surprised if someone will syndicate it and put it on TV a few days after the actual fight. People have done this before and I see no reason why they will not do it again.

In fact that may well be the reason they did not bid to put it up live in the Philippines.

Showing it on tape delay is less risky.

But even at that it is still worth a lot of cash.

And if Mayol wins the fight, it will increase in value particularly from the advertiser's point of view since more people will tend to see the fight and witness how Mayol won the fight. Thus, the products advertised will be seen by more people.

That of course translates to more money for the syndicators.

I expect therefore that if the fight is shown in the Philippines, the syndicators will find it in their hearts to share the revenue with Mayol.

In fact, the fight contract should stipulate that!

Anything less than that will be immoral and certainly unfair to Mayol. It is tantamount to stealing part of the hard earned money from Mayol.

After all Mayol stakes his life not only for himself and his family but for his country as well.

The least he deserves is a piece of the Philippine TV rights!
