THE Z IS BACK, BIGGER AND HOPEFULLY BETTER

Z Gorres, one of the better known fighters of the ALA Gym in Cebu is back in his old stomping grounds in good ole’ LA. Gorres was spotted training at the famed Wildcard Gym of Freddie Roach in Hollywood.

Gorres has not been seen on a regular basis at the Wildcard since those days in the summer of 2007 when he was training for the “World Cup” that occurred at Sacramento, California. Gorres won via a rugged 8th round TKO over Mexican Eric Ortiz to capture the vacant IBF Inter-continental Super flyweight title.

Riding on the victory over Ortiz, Gorres was fitted against the cocky Armenian/Aussie,Vic Darchinyan to determine who would then challenge Demitri Kirilov for the title. As luck had it, the fight which was held at the Cebu Coliseum ended in a controversial draw.

Following that fight which sapped out a great deal of the excitement in Gorres, he rebounded nicely via a 10 round UD win over African Nick Otieno the Waterfront Hotel also at Cebu.

After that Gorres was off the boxing radar for a year before he surfaced and won a fight via 7th round TKO over Roberto Carlos Leyva to win the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight crown.

Gorres has long outgrown his days as a superflyweight and looks very comfortable at bamtamweight. In fact, he looks fit and trimmed and ready to go when we saw him today.

Gorres’ next fight will be on the undercard of the Donnie Nietes-Manuel Vargas minimumweight WBO title fight on September 12, 2009 at Nayarit, Mexico.

According to his trainer, Ala Villamor and ALA VP Dennis Canete, Gorres is scheduled to trade leathers with Cruz Carbajal of Mexico.

Carbajal, 29-26-2, (25KO) is an old experienced gladiator who in his long career has fought people like Silence Mabusa, Ratanachi Sor Vorapin, Gerardo Espinosa , Mauricio Martinez, Fernando Montiel and Lehloholo Ledwaba.

It is refreshing to see a nice young man like Gorres back at the Wildcard Gym. Along the way, he has suffered setbacks, but judging from what we saw of him to day, he is well on the way back to re-claim his glory days, a bit bigger and heavier and hopefully better.
