ABNER MARES VS ANSELMO MORENO FOR WBC SUPER BANTAMWEIGH CROWN OCT 27 IN ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA

Undefeated WBC Super Bantamweight World champion Abner Mares of Guadalajara Mexico (right) will make the first defense of his green/golden belt against WBA bantamweight super champion Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno of Panama in a Showtime telecast on October 27 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, both camps have announced.

The 26 year-old 2-division champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13KO's) trained by the famous Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain and well-known after his two 12-round dramatic wars with tough Ghanian Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko, captured the vacant WBC super bantamweight crown by outpointing veteran Puertorrican Eric Morel last April in El Paso, Texas.

Meanwhile, Panamanian Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (33-1-1, 12KO's), the reigning WBA world bantamweight champion since May of 2008, will be stepping up for the first time in the super bantamweight division to face Mares, though Moreno's 118 lbs world title will not be in play.

Widely considered as the best bantamweight in the world, "Chemito Moreno is a highly skillful southpaw who has successfully defended his bantamweight world title 10 times, mostly in the Latin America and Europe circuits.

Moreno's last win was last April, a round 9 knockout victory over Tijuana fighter David de la Mora (24-2, 17KO's) in El Paso, Texas.

Even though during the last years they have fought in different parts of the world, there is one common opponent shared by Mares and Moreno: "The Ragging Bull" Vic Darchinyan.

Mares, a former Olympian who in the past suffered a detached retina, won a narrow split decision over the veteran Armenian two years ago in Tacoma, Washington, while Moreno handsomely dominated the aggressive Darchinyan in a landslide unanimous decision win last December in Anaheim, California.

Mares and Moreno are promoted by Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and have headlined together in two successful Showtime telecasts, the first one on December 3, then on April 21.

In the past, both fighters have been tipped as opponents of the sensational Nonito Donaire, but their match never materialized, likely because they belong to different promotion companies.

The Filipino Flash is promoted by Top Rank while champions Abner Mares and Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno are Golden Boy fighters.
