GM Laylo ties for third in Hongkong chessfest

Hongkong---Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo finished in a tie for third place at Sunday's conclusion of the Hong Kong International Open Chess Championship 2014 at the Convocation Room, Main Building room 218, The University of Hong Kong, Pok Fu Lam Road, Hong Kong.
The former top player of San Sebastian College under the tutelage of National Master Homer Cunanan defeated compatriots Fide Master Mari Joseph Turqueza and National Master Noel dela Cruz in the last two rounds to raise his total to 7.0 points on six wins, one loss and two draws.
However, after the tie break was applied, the Marikina City resident Laylo finished 4th overall in the nine (9) round Swiss-system FIDE tournament. Also with 7.0 points are third placer Zhang Xiaopeng of China and 5th placer IM Manuel Pena Gomez of Spain.
GM Yu Ruiyuan and GM Zeng Chongsheng of China, tallied 7.5 points apiece to finish in a tie for first to second places. Yu is the only player who inflicted Laylo's setback in the seventh round.
Meanwhile, Fide Masters Roel Abelgas and Deniel Causo of the Philippines tallied identical 6.5 points and tied for 6th to 12th spots.
Other Filipino woodpushers who competed in the said chessfest are National Master Nelson Villanueva (5.5 points), National Master Ryan Dungca (5.0 points) and chess prodigy Jerlyn Mae San Diego (4.5 points).-Marlon Bernardino-
