NBA -- Pelicans trip Heat, 98-86 in preseason play By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Sun, 05 Oct 2014 ![]() LOIUSVILLE -- In the first preseason game of the upcoming 2014-15 regular season, the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Miami Heat, 98-86, before a crowd of 20,074 at the KFC Yum! Center here in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a homecoming of sorts for three of the visiting players, Anthony Davis and Darius Miller played at the University of Kentucky while rookie Pelicans guard Russ Smith spent four years at the University of Louisville, where he helped the Cardinals win the 2013 NCAA title. The loudest cheers of the night were for Smith, who was met with chants of "We want Russ! from the stands. The first half started slowly, with the Heat outscoring the "visiting" Pelicans, 18-16, in the opening quarter. The Heat and Pelicans ended the half shooting only 35.1 percent and 37.5 percent, respectively, and New Orleans took a 44-35 halftime lead. Jimmer Fredette led the Pelicans with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting as New Orleans' bench provided the bulk of the team's scoring load, scoring all but 19 of their 98 points. Forward James Ennis paced the Heat with 17 points while Danny Granger and Shawne Williams added 12 apiece. As might be expected in a preseason opener, both head coaches played into their rotations, sitting their starters for swaths of time. Anthony Davis played only 11 minutes, all in the first half, while veteran Heat starters Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh also saw somewhat limited minutes. Bosh provided 9 points and 6 rebounds and Wade added 6 points and 3 assists. The Heat will have their next shot at a preseason win on Tuesday when they face the Orlando Magic at home. The Pelicans, meanwhile, host the Washington Wizards in New Orleans on Wednesday.
