THREE FILIPINO WOODPUSHERS WIN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THAILAND

BANGKOK, THAILAND --- Conrado Diaz, 29, Cesar Apalla, 37, and Rommel Posadas, 34, won major international chess competitions in Thailand that attracted over 150 participants from seven different countries (Philippines, Thailand, Macedonia, India, China, Japan and Korea).
Diaz, a former Adamson University standout from Marikina City topped the FIDE rated rapid event Open section with undefeated score of five wins after five games of play in the just ended Chess4thai Main Event 2014 here at the Cha-Da Hotel on Sunday.
Playing white, he beat Thanadon Kulpruethanon of Thailand in the final round in their Slav exchange skimrish.
Meantime, Apalla, ex-Rizal Technological University (RTU) mainstay from Koronodal City, South Cotabato shared the top honors with Posadas from Pandacan, Manila, who both agreed their game into a draw. The duo tallied 4.5 points in the Non-Fide rated rapid event.
Meanwhile, National Master Ric Portugalera won the Bangkok Chess Club Blitz Tournament last Friday at the Queen Victoria here in Bangkok.
Diaz and Posadas are both chess instructor of Gainsfield Chess and Language Center, Home of Future Champions, while Portugalera is chess instructor of Jirapak Chess Academy.
No less than Bangkok Chess Club (BCC) President Kai Tuorila and tournament organizer Somkid Saipan led the closing rites. Chief arbiter is Jirapak Pitirotjirathon and assisted by Gainsfield Chess and Language Center director Henry Calacday.-Marlon Bernardino-
