NAZARENO DEFEATS ESPARAS, CAPTURES RP WELTERWEIGHT TITLE By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Jun 2014 Nazareno. Dan Nazareno, Jr. of the Rod Nazario captures the vacant RP Welterweight Championship when he defeated Ronel Esparas via a 3rd round TKO in last Sunday?s main event of the Balayan Fiesta Fistiana held at the Kutawkutaw Multipurpose Gymnasium, Balayan, Batangas. It was evident at the beginning of the match that Nazareno was clearly the bigger boxer which he immediately took advantage of by imposing his will on Esparas hitting the latter with punishing punches to the body and to the head. The game Esparas was able to hold his own while the bout lasted and he even managed to connect shots of his own but never enough to bother Nazareno who kept continuing the assault. At the end of the rest period of the 3rd round, Esparas decided that he had enough and wisely quit. In one of the supporting events, Ronald Pontillas was virtually breaking down Jonard Postrano before Referee Eduardo Nobleza mercifully stopped the beating at 1:53 of the 7th round in a lightweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds. In another supporting event, Eranio Semillano won a lacklustre bout earning a unanimous technical decision (50-46 twice and 48-47) over veteran Richard Garcia. This bantamweight bout was scheduled for 10 rounds but was stopped at 2:29 in the 5th due to a cut sustained by Semillano from an accidental headbutt. For the third supporting event, Vergel Puton scored a KO win over Prell Tupaz when the latter failed to beat the count following a knockdown at 2:47 of the 4th round. The bout was fought at a 124-lb. limit and scheduled for 10 rounds. Summarizing the results of the other bouts: Toto Landero and Rolly Sumalpong, Jr. figured in a majority draw (58-56 for Landero for one judge and 57-57 on two judges? scorecards) in their 6-round bout held at the minimum-weight division. Sumalpong?s shots were cleaner and crispier whilst Landero?s were the harder. Arnel Caoktoy nailed Mark Paloso with a vicious right hook to the head scoring a KO win in 1:12 of the of the 6th and final round. The bout was fought at super-flyweight. Light-flyweights Rommel Berwela and Jerome Clavite figured in a split draw (39-37 Berwela, 39-37 Clavite, and 38-38) in a technical but nevertheless entertaining 4-rounder. The event was held in honour of the late boxing commentator Moy Lainez and was promoted by ?In This Corner? headed by Rommel Nazario. Balayan Councilor JR Fronda and Family sponsored the event. The bouts were covered by In this Corner which is being aired every Sunday on PTV Ch. 4 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salvador Lopez. |
