Call it volume punching, rapid-fire combinations, or relentless pressure—William Zepeda simply never stopped throwing. Launching flurry after flurry of five, six, seven, and eight punches at a time throughout the night, Zepeda smothered Lamont Roach Jr. to claim a clear unanimous decision victory and finally capture his first world title—the WBC Lightweight World Championship—on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
The official judges' scorecards reflected Zepeda's dominance over the 12-round distance: Tim Cheatham: 117-111, Eric Cheek: 117-111 and David Sutherland: 118-110.
The victory marks a triumphant comeback for the San Mateo Atenco native. Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) took a full year off following his first career defeat against pound-for-pound star Shakur Stevenson. Re-emerging in peak physical condition, he appeared completely rejuvenated, showcasing the blistering output and relentless engine that made him one of boxing's most feared lightweight contenders.
From the opening bell, Zepeda trapped Roach against the ropes and refused to let him breathe, relying on relentless body attacks and high-guard pressure to dictate every minute of the action.
Roach (25-2-3, 10 KOs) certainly had his moments early on, landing crisp counter hooks and demonstrating his elite defense. As Zepeda poured on the heat in the second half of the fight, Roach dug deep—coming out strong in the final three rounds to stave off a late stoppage and force a distance finish.
However, Roach's late surge was not enough to deter or dismantle the determined Mexican buzzsaw in front of him. Absorbing just the second loss of his career, remained classy in defeat.
"He came into the fight more prepared tonight," Roach acknowledged in his post-fight interview, before promising his fans he would return to the ring stronger.
With the WBC Lightweight strap now wrapped firmly around his waist, Zepeda cements his place atop one of boxing's most competitive divisions—setting up massive potential unification bouts in the near future.
