SULAIMAN ORDERS MARQUEZ VS PACQUIAO! WBC LETTER REACHES PACQUIAO CAMP
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 21 Mar 2007
WBC President Jose Sulaiman Chagnon has just announced that newly-crowned WBC superfeatherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez should face Manny Pacquiao first, before he can start talking about a rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera.
Sulaiman, speaking to James Blears of Boxingscene, stated: ?Rules are rules, and definitely state that there must be a mandatory defense, and we are going to push for that. The next fight for Juan Manuel Marquez will be against Manny Paquiao, if Manny defeates Jorge Solis."
Earlier, it had been announced at the Marquez-Barrera post fight press conference that a rematch has already been tabled for September, on the week of the Mexican Independence Day.
Sulaiman said that while he saw Marquez the winner over Barrera by 'not more than two points,' he was not in agreement with the scores of the three judges, who had Marquez the winner by much bigger margins than what had otherwise been a highly competitive bout.
Meanwhile, Marquez is also expected to decide within the next few days on which belt he plans to retain, as he also holds the WBO featherweight crown.
Rex 'Wakee' Salud, in an interview with this writer, has informed that he has received the WBC's letter addressed to Pacquiao, reminding the latter to confirm his interest of being the mandatory challenger to Marquez.
Salud said that the WBC is giving Pacquiao until Friday, March 23, to inform the WBC in writing of his desire to take on Marquez for the WBC title.
