CHICAGO -- The No.1 seed in the Eastern Conference is in big trouble after the Indiana Pacers fell to a 3-2 hole against the No.8 ranked Atlanta Hawks Monday night at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The Hawks used a 41-point second quarter barrage to capture Game 5 and unbreak a 2-2 tie in this round-one best-of-7 quarterfinals series. The Hawks go for the knockout punch Thursday night (Friday AM in Manila) when Atlanta hosts Game 6 at the Philips Arena.
Mike Scott scored all of his 17 points in the pivotal second period, drilling 5 threes as the Hawks turned a 21-20 first quarter deficit into a 61-40 halftime advantage. Atlanta stepped on the gas further and when DeMarre Carroll swished a 3 at the 7:08 mark of the third period, the Hawks were up 50-30.
Shelvin Mack was huge off the bench for Atlanta with a team-high 20. Paul Millsap finished with 18 and 8 boards, Kyle Korver sank 5 threes for 16, and Carroll added 17.
Point guard Jeff Teague had a relatively quiet 12 points and four assists but the Hawks managed by shooting 33 of 66 field goals (50 percent) and 15 of 27 triples (55.6 percent). The Hawks also made 26 of 33 free throws.
Paul George had another all-around fare of 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while David West checked in 16 and 7 boards. George Hill and Lance Stephenson scored 16 apiece as Indy converted 36 of 78 from the field (46.2 percent) and 14 of 30 from long distance (46.7 percent). (Homer D. Sayson)
