NBA -- Knicks outlast Pacers to win 7 in a row

PhilBoxing.com

CHICAGO -- Don't count out the New York Knicks just yet.

Several games out of the playoffs race two weeks ago and basically given up dead, the feisty Knicks are plowing their way back to contention and won their seventh straight assignment Wednesday night at the Madison Square Garden.

Carmelo Anthony sank 12 of 23 field goals for 34 points and Amar'e Stoudemire drilled 21 as the Knicks outlasted the Indiana Pacers, 92-86.

Point guard Raymond Felton finished with 11 points and six dimes and New York won despite making only 32 of 82 field goals, including just 4-for-17 from 3-point country.

At 28-40, the Knicks are just 4 1/2 games behind the 31-35 Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and last playoffs berth in the Eastern Conference. Despite missing their injured best player -- Al Horford -- for the rest of the season, the Hawks are hanging tough and have won five in a row.

"This says that we're really coming together. At this point, we're trying to do whatever it takes to make this playoff run," Knicks center Tyson Chandler told NBA.com of his team's determined push to punch a postseason ticket.

Down 39-23 early in the second quarter, the Pacers chopped the deficit to 67-66 at the 10:53 mark of the fourth quarter. But that was as close as they could get as New York, behind Melo's shooting arm, held on in the homestretch.

New York native Lance Stephenson led Indiana with 21 and nine rebounds while Roy Hibbert added 20. Paul George tallied 17 but he missed 13 of 17 field goals.

Despite their debacle at the Big Apple, the Pacers continue to lead the Eastern Conference with a 50-18 record. (Homer D. Sayson)
