SAN MIG COFFEE WINS PBA PHILIPPINE CUP

The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers finally crushed Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 93-87, in Game Six of their best-of-seven series to win the Philippine Cup last night at the Araneta Coliseum. Guard Mark Barroca scored 24 points, as he delivered 10 of the Mixers? final 12 points to be named Most Valuable Player of the finals, his first major individual award in the PBA.

Coach Tim Cone won a record 16th PBA title breaking the record of the legendary Baby Dalupan as the league?s all-time winningest coach.The win also entitled the Purefoods franchise its sixth All-Filipino crown, also a record in the PBA. They also bagged the league?s most prestigious title in 1991, 1993, 1997, 2006, and 2010.

The trio of James Yap, Peter June Simon, and Marc Pingris also won their third Philippine Cup title, and they equalled the first three All-Filipino crown for the Hotdogs of the superduo of Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codinera. In the 26-year history of the franchise, it was their first ever back-to-back title after winning the Governors? Cup last season.

San Mig Coffee took early 28-15 lead in the first period. With the Mixers still leading, 30-17, Painters coach Yeng Guiao told his team to walk out of the court after a foul call on their center JR Quinahan. They however returned to the court, and San Mig Coffee further widened their lead by 17 points in the second quarter.

Rain or Shine resurrected and scored the last 11 points of the first half to reduce the San Mig Coffee lead to just six points, 49-43 at halftime. The Elasto Painters continued their rally and came very close to within a solitary point, 51-50, on a three-pointer by Jireh Ibanes. Yap led with four points in a quick 7-2 run to place the Mixers on a 58-52 advantage. Rain or Shine retaliated with a 13-4 blitz on three-pointers from Chris Tiu and Paul Lee who bailed out their team 65-62 ahead with three minutes left in the third quarter.

Then San Mig Coffee with Simon, Barroca, and Sangalang combining for a 17-5 spur to give the Mixers a 79-70 advantage with more than six minutes left in the game. Barroca nailed a three-point play with 2:44 left to give San Mig Coffee a more comfortable lead, 84-78. He sank one out of two charities for a 92-86 advantage with 29.4 seconds left to seal the title for the Coffee Mixers.
