NBA -- Pistons fire head coach Cheeks

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Detroit Pistons are looking for a new bench leader after they fired head coach Maurice Cheeks on Sunday.
"This was a difficult decision for the organization to make but we needed to make a change," Joe Dumars, the president of basketball operations said in a press release. "We have great respect for Maurice and appreciate his hard work," Dumars added.
Despite splurging during the off-season by acquiring the services of Brandon Jennings from the Milwaukee Bucks and Josh Howard from the Atlanta Hawks, the Pistons are a disappointing 21-29 as the All-Star break nears.
Ranked No.9 in a weak Eastern Conference, the Pistons are a mere one-half game behind the 22-29 Charlotte Bobcats for the 8th and last playoffs berth.
According to a report by Marc Stein of ESPN, the Pistons could elevate assistant John Loyer as the interim head coach. But the same report also indicated that former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins could be named as Cheeks' replacement by Monday.
Prior to his stint in Detroit, Cheeks also served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and the Philadelphia 76ers. (JSM)
