Armando Santos wins vacant IBF International Flyweight Title (Photos)

Armando "La Cobra" Santos beat Silvio Olteanu of Romania last night by majority decision to crown himself the new IBF International Flyweight Champion. The fight, held at the Foro Polanco Gymnasium in downtown Mexico City, dubbed "Estruendo En La Capital" (Rumble in the Capital) was the main feature of a championship doubleheader shown live in Mexico and the US by Televisa through Fox Deportes, ushering the first major boxing presentation of Canelo Promotions for 2014.
The bout was tight and fought in the trenches throughout all twelve rounds. The local hero, Armando Santos, 14-3-0, 8KOs worked behind a steady jab, as a decoy for his follow-up straights to the face of his shorter foe, each hit
drawing loud cheers from the partisan crowd. On the other hand, the 36 year old Romanian, Silvio Olteanu, 14-7-1, 6KOs, who fights out of Madrid, Spain, countered effectively by timing his big hooks to the body as he constantly darted in and out of harm's way.
This latest IBF plum is the third Regional title that Armando Santos has captured in 9 months. Last August 24, 2013, he won the WBC USNBC Flyweight crown with a lopsided points victory over Philippine boxer Roilo Golez in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Three months earlier, in May 2013, he knocked out Herald Molina in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico to claim the NABF Flyweight tiara.
The co-feature, a WBC Latino Silver Flyweight Championship between Mexicans warriors Oscar "Fantasma" Gonzalez and Jesus "Zurdo" Galicia tragically ended when the highly favored Oscar Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital and later declared brain dead, after losing by a 10th round KO.
