GORRES LOOKS SHARP IN FINAL SPARRING By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Feb 2007 Z “The Dream” Gorres looked sharp in his final sparring session in preparation for his much awaited battle for the WBO super flyweight title against Mexico’s Fernando Montiel at the Cebu City Sports Complex on Saturday. Gorres who is the mandatory challenger for Montiel’s title sparred two rounds with Franklin Albia and according to trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor showed “good speed and skills and was ready as ever.” Gorres has a ring record of 26-1-1 with 14 knockouts while Montiel’s record us 32-2-1 with 24 KO’s. In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Villamor who twice fought for the world minimum weight title but lost said he was impressed by “the motivation and determination” of the flashy southpaw who had all along dreamed of winning a world title. Emerging ring sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista also went two rounds, one each with Reman Salim and Weng Haya and although respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer revealed that Bautista looked “a little sluggish” Villamor said there was nothing to worry about since the undefeated youngster had looked great over the past two weeks. Villamor indicated that both fighters would have no problems making the weight. Bautista battles Colombian Feider Viloria in a WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title fight. Gorres and Bautista returned recently from a training stint under celebrated trainer Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. Roach had earlier predicted that both Gorres and Bautista would be future world champions. The blockbuster fight card is a co-promotion of Sammy Gello-ani and Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar De La Hoya and will be telecast on a slightly delayed basis over the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN which will also carry the fight to Filipinos abroad on The Filipino Channel, TFC.
