CHICAGO -- The Golden Nuggets are welcoming 2014 with a bang, winning two in a row, this time at the expense of the Los Angeles Lakers, who were ran out of their own building on Sunday.
Timofey Mozgov powered his way to 20 points and seven rebounds while point guard Ty Lawson added 20 and 12 assists as the Nuggets routed the Lakers, 137-115, at the Staples Center.
"They're down with injuries and we knew we had to come out and really stick it to them, really put our foot on the gas pedal," Denver's Nate Robinson told NBA.com. Robinson, an ex- Chicago Bull, joined the Nuggets rout with 21.
The Lakers led 61-60 at the halftime break, but they began to unravel in the second half, especially in the finally 12 minutes where the Nuggets unloaded 44 points. Denver's 137-point total was the most the Lakers surrendered since giving up 146 (also against Denver) on November 6, 1984.
Pau Gasol, the center of trade rumors involving Cleveland's Andrew Bynum, stayed focus with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lakers. Jodie Meeks chipped in 23 and Kendall Marshall had 17 assists, but the Lakers made only 42 of 89 shots and missed 18 of their 21 three-point attempts.
After a tight first two quarter, the Nuggets simply imposed their size of the injury-ravaged Lakers. Denver out rebounded Los Angeles, 58-38, and the Nuggets also ran away with a 30-9 fast break points advantage.
With their improved 16-17 won-lost record, the Nuggets inched closer to a playoffs berth, just 2 1/2 games behind the No.8 ranked Dallas Mavericks, who are 19-15.
The Lakers, meanwhile, dropped to 14-20, 13th place in the Western Conference. (Homer D. Sayson)
