MOSLEY BEATS COLLAZO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Feb 2007
Las Vegas, NV.- Shane Mosley, picking up from where he left off from his last fight, where he battered Fernando Vargas to submission, proved once again that in boxing, sometimes age and experience can be an advantage.
At the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort here in the glitzy City of Las Vegas, Mosley knocked down Luis Collazo with a short right hand during the 11th round enroute to a 12 round unanimous decision. Although Collazo stood up at the count of four, the end was inevitable. Mosley was simply better and the 3-1 odds in his favor was right on the button. The fight was an eliminator for the WBC welterweight title.
Mosley, who dropped to welterweight (147 lbs) was just as fast as when he was a super welterweight.(154lbs) In fact, he appeared to be even a bit faster. In many instances he beat Collazo to the punch although Collazo has a longer reach advantage. Collazo was a former co-holder of the welterweight title until he lost it to Ricky Hutton in May 2006
In May in this year, when Floyd Mayweather gives up the WBC welterweight title to fight Oscar de la Hoya , Mosley being the winner tonight will most probably inherit the title. The announced scores were 118-08 (twice) and 119-108 for Mosley.
After the fight, Mosley said that he ?knew I was faster than him and could hit him with quick jabs.? ?By the 3rd, I knew I would be able to hit him with different shots?, Mosley further stated.
Collazo said that he hurt his left hand while training and he again hurt it in the third round making him ineffective during the fight. But to his credit, Collazo did not give up. He was still swinging and giving it all till the last bell.
