United Boxing Promotions Delivers Action Packed Fight Card at Hershey Centre

PhilBoxing.com

A couple of days after the United Boxing Promotions fight card at the Hershey Centre, the talk among fight fans are still actively buzzing about the latest fight card. It was a most memorable event that highlighted many young and up and coming boxers. Their performances have left long lasting impressions to boxing aficionados here in the Toronto region.

The pro game up here is a difficult one since boxing is still a niche sport and it is not easy to market. However, the dramatic performances of Brandon ?Bad Boy? Cook, Marc ?Gwapo? Pagcaliwangan, Steve ?The Piranha? Wilcox, Dillion ?Big Country? Carman, the visiting Mexican Boxers and the rest of the young guns put on a great show from start to finish. This was a successful, exciting and one of the best attended fight cards held by United Boxing Promotions recent memory.

There were also many new fans who attended their first live boxing event in addition to the familiar faces who have been loyal supporters at the Mississauga Hershey Centre that hold boxing events several times a year. The strong fan support for Brandon Cook, Dillon Carman and Steve Wilcox were complemented with something new that the Hershey Centre has not seen before.

The fans and supporters of Marc ?Gwapo? Pagcaliwangan who fought in his first homecoming had a pronounced presence in the crowd. Based on Gwapo?s guts and glorious performance, his fan base will only get bigger from here on end. It was evident that Gwapo?s fan support took over the Hershey Centre during his fight.

Last Saturday was probably the most charged fight card since the ?See the Rise? fight card from several years ago. Even without the main feature attraction in exciting and smooth boxer Dangerous ?Denton? Daley, United Promotions, Tyler Buxton Promotions and Title Fight Promotions put on a great show. Most of the match ups were absolutely dangerous and many potential threats to hometown boxers who had emerged from the grassroots of boxing within Southern Ontario, Canada.

In the main event, Canadian Light Middleweight Titlist Brandon ?Bad Boy? Cook proved that he is a force to reckon with once again. Cook who has one of the larger fan base in the local boxing circuit here, manages to get the job done with each of his fights since the start of his career. Cook keeps on boxing his way to victory by sticking to his game plan as a technical ring tactician and systematically breaks down his opponents. Last Saturday night was no exception, Cook made short work of his Italian opponent Luca Michael Pasqua within 5 rounds. Pasqua was overwhelmed by Cook, the Italian hit the canvas in each round. Cook?s collective pressure and beautiful technical boxing along with the execution of his combinations and as a big finisher got the job done. Having been ringside for most of Cook's fights at the Hershey Centre, it?s been a real threat to see him evolve into a complete fighter. Cook remains undefeated with 12 wins and 7 knockouts.

In the co-main event, Steven ?The Piranha? Wilcox fought his most difficult fight to date against Mexican warrior Christian Uruzquieta. It wasn?t too long ago when the tall and lanky boxer from Hamilton who was a highly appraised amateur before he turned pro, made a lasting impression with his pro debut a few years ago. Uruzquieta who had no quit in him pushed Wilcox to the limit and exhausted him in this fight as the fight went back and forth for 8 rounds. It was an intense moment when Wilcox hit the canvas in the seventh round, all of Hershey Centre stopped for a moment in time as a local boxing favorite has fallen before their eyes. Wilcox who usually starts slow because he studies his opponents well in the early rounds did not have that opportunity because Uruzquieta pressured Wilcox like never before. Steven Wilcox started to fade and shown vulnerability after he was knocked down in the seventh. Although Wilcox recovered to finish the fight in the last round, he was in deep waters and was in survival mode. Perhaps Wilcox won majority of the eight rounds, however after the bell rang and the decision came in, Steven Wilcox (8W-1L-0D) suffered the first loss of his career. Christian Uruzquieta (11W-2L-0D) won by split decision.

Marc ?Gwapo? Pagcaliwangan fought the better of the two Mexican fighters. He put up his 6 undefeated wins and 7 accumulated rounds against southpaw Mexican Warrior Octavio ?Coco? Hernandez who had 18 fights and 70 rounds of boxing under him. Many who witnessed the fight between Pagcaliwangan and Octavio called this fight as the fight of the night. It was certainly one of the most memorable fights at the Hershey Centre in recent memory. The fight ended in a split draw, and whenever there?s a draw there is certainly controversy. Many scored the fight 4 rounds for Pagcaliwangan and 2 rounds for Octavio, but it could also have gone the other way based on the mixed feedback this writer had received from the fans. Either way, Gwapo showed that he has the chin and the heart to fight a dangerous Mexican warrior, to get a split draw against Octavio who performed like a veteran boxer in there, was actually a win for Team Gwapo. Pagcaliwangan (6L, 6KO-0D-1D) is still undefeated and survives his toughest fight to date against Octavio Hernandez (13W-5L-1D).

The rubber match between Dillon ?Big Country? Carman vs. Slyvera Louis was a vindication for Carman. It took only 1 round for Carman to knock out Louis compared to the 5 round war they had in their first encounter. The victory over Louis must be Carman?s sweetest victory to date.

Undercards Results
Kevin Higson defeated Reginald Franklin via Unanimous Decision
Ryan Young defeated Mitch Louis-Charles via RTD
John Patsidiotis defeated Thomas Da Silva via first round TKO.

Now that the latest United Promotions Fight Card is in the books, the boxing community in Ontario will certainly look forward to see the return of the top performers from this fight card. It was certainly an event worth remembering and watching again when it was shown on TV.

Writers Note: Behind the scenes at the Hershey Centre Carlos ?Cutman? Varela had a very busy night, he was the cutman and wrapped the hands for 4 out of the 7 fights. Thank you Carlos for your contribution and dedication to keep the show going!
