NBA -- Warriors open voluntary team workouts with high expectations By Jason Aniel PhilBoxing.com Sat, 07 Sep 2013 Oakland, CA ? For the second year in a row, the Golden State Warriors held voluntary player workouts in the Warriors? practice facilities last week. Last year?s team captains, Stephen Curry and David Lee, organized a similar preseason camp last year, where the Warriors ended the regular season with a record of 47-35. The Warriors lost in six games in the Second Round of the Playoffs to the eventual Western Conference Champions, San Antonio Spurs. Curry and Lee hope to develop the same chemistry and teamwork with the new players as they did in last year?s camp. The voluntary camp mainly consists of weight training and pick-up basketball games. 3rd Team All-NBA Power Forward, David Lee, has fully recovered from off-season hip surgery, and should be ready for the start of training camp. Lee was in the middle of many trade rumors involving LaMarcus Aldridge and Dwight Howard during the free agency period last summer. Despite the trade rumors, Lee has attempted to improve his game by getting into better shape and extending his shooting range to the three-point line. It has been reported that Lee has lost 8 pounds and 5% of his body fat over the off-season. Depending on Coach Mark Jackson?s game strategy, Lee believe he can make corner and top of the arc three pointers, a wrinkle in his game which he has not previously shown. For Point Guard, Stephen Curry, it will be the first time since his rookie season where he did not have to undergo rehabilitation for an injury in the offseason. Curry had a breakout year highlighted by 54 points scored against the New York Knicks at the famous Madison Square Garden, and a record 272 three-pointers made in one season. Curry hinted during the camp that he expects the team to win at least 50 games. The Warriors have been considered by many to be a top 5 Western Conference team. The Warriors official training camp does not begin until late September. The Warriors have added free agent, Andre Iguodala, to a core group of young players that include Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, Andrew Bogut, Curry, and Lee. The Warriors also signed undrafted rookie, Seth Curry, to a non-guaranteed contract and an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during training camp. Seth Curry is the younger brother of Stephen Curry. The Warriors? first preseason game will be in Ontario, California, against the Los Angeles Lakers October 5, 2013. The Warriors will also open the regular season against the same Lakers at home on October 30, 2013. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Jason Aniel. |
