Top-notch promoter Sammy ‘Don King’ Gello-ani of the SGG Promotions disclosed an official communication from WBO President Francisco Valcarcel that the referee in this much-awaited clash will be Samuel Viruet of Mahopac, New York. More than 21 years as a referee, veteran Viruet has officiated his first WBO title bout in 1995 in a lightweight championship fight between Steve Robinson and Naseem Hamed at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. In his career, he had been around the world to officiate boxing matches, including such places as South Africa, Germany, Thailand, Scotland, France, England, Wales and Italy. He officiated renowned Joan Guzman vs. Terdsak Jandaeng scuffle in the US in 2005 and the Marco Antonio vs. Paul Lloyd WBO super bantamweight titlist in 1999. The judges will be Raul Caiz of Los Angeles, California, Chuck Giampa of Las Vegas, Nevada and Denny Nelson of St. Paul, Minnesota. Judge Caiz is a 21-year veteran while Judge Giampa made his debut on September 24, 1986. Of the three veteran judges in this card, Nelson got the longest stint of 31 years. He started his career on April 23, 1975 and got his first world title fight in July 1980 during a WBC light welterweight bout between Jaoul Mamby and Esteban De Jesus at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was one of the judges in the Daniel Ponce de Leon-Gerson Guerrero WBO featherweight title eliminator on 27 March 206 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Caiz garnered a record of 222 matches under his gavel as a boxing judge for 20 years. He started his career on September 28, 1986 with his first title count in 1988 during a WBC bantamweight crown match at the Plaza de Toros Indias in Cartagena, Colombia. He had been a judge on two Marco Barrera title fights, two with Fernando Montiel, and one with Juan Manuel Marquez. Chuck Giampa had an illustrious record of 279 fights judged in only 20 years as of December 31, 2006. He debuted on September 24, 1986 and judged his first title fight on May 30, 1987 on the bid for the vacant IBF heavyweight level at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had been a judge on the title fights of such ring stars as Oscar Dela Hoya (8 times), Marco Antonio Barrera (5 times), Erik Morales (3 times), Evander Holyfield (6 times), Mike Tyson (4 times), Riddick Bowe (4 times) and George Foreman (3 times). He was one of the judges in the Hector Velasquez-Bobby Pacquiao and Carlos Manuel Baldomir-Floyd Mayweather, Jr. brawls in 2006. He was counting the hits in the Erik Morales- Manny Pacquiao bid for the vacant WBC international Super Featherweight and IBA Super Featherweight titles on March 19, 2005 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was also in MGM Grand to vote for the disqualification of Mike Tyson after Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear as retaliation for the headbutt he suffered from Holyfield. In the mean time, Gorres continued slugging it out with sparring partners, Russian Dimitri Kirilov and Mike Franco at the Wild Card Gym of famous trainer, Freddie Roach. ALA gym fist broher Rey ‘Boom-Boom’ Bautista sparred with partners Vicente Escobedo and Enrique Cuevedo as they made full use of the remaining time before their scheduled departure back here on February 2. Gello-ani was high spirited on the developments. “We have the date; we have the venue; and now we have the appointment of the official referee and the judges,” he grinned. “All systems go.” |
