BAUTISTA, GORRES LOOK GOOD IN TRAINING By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Jan 2007 Emerging ring sensation Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista, the No.1 ranked WBO super bantamweight and Z "The Dream" Gorres who is the mandatory WBO super flyweight challenger have looked good in training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles. Outstanding Filipino trainer and former world minimum weight title challenger Edito "Ala" Villamor has informed respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer that Bautista and Gorres showed good form and were "doing very well" since they started training one day after arriving in Los Angeles to prepare for their battles against Latino fighters on February 24 at the Cebu City Sports Complex. The undefeated Bautista who has a record of 21-0 with 16 knockouts has been trading blows daily with lightweights Vicente Escobedo who has an impressive record of 11 knockouts in 12 wins with only one loss and Enrique Cuevedo. The flashy southpaw Gorres on the other hand has been slugging it out with IBF No. 1 super flyweight contender Dimitri Kirilov who has a record of 28-3 with 9 KO’s and 19 year old Mike "Lil Warrior" Franco who is undefeated in five fights with four knockouts. Bautista and Gorres are expected to return about two weeks before Gorres’ title showdown with WBO champion Fernando Montiel while Bautista will clash with in a supporting bout that is certain to add to the excitement since the 20 year old youngster from Candijay, Bohol has a solid following. Bautista was scheduled to battle reigning super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon who claimed he didn’t want to fight in the Philippines in the planned Philippines-Mexico World Cup which has been postponed to the middle of the year from an earlier March date. Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez earlier told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that sooner or later Bautista will become the mandatory challenger and Ponce De Leon will have to fight him. Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach is also scheduled to arrive two or three days before the blockbuster fight card. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
