BREAKING NEWS: BAUTISTA ADDED IN GORRES-MONTIEL WORLD TITLE BOUT! PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Jan 2007 The undefeated Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista, described by Oscar De la Hoya as the "next Manny Pacquiao" from the Philippines, will be seeing action on February 24 as a co-feature to the mammoth World Boxing Organization (WBO) superfly showdown between Filipino Z 'The Dream' Gorres and defending champion Fernando Montiel. This was confirmed yesterday by promoter Sammy 'Don King' Gello-ani, who said in an interview that the Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar De la Hoya has decided to include Bautista in the show against a Latino fighter. "We have decided on putting Bautista in the card because we want to give the fans a major treat, as Boom Boom will be a major draw," Gello-ani said in an interview yesterday. Both Bautista and Gorres, along with their Filipino trainer Edito Villamor, are currently training at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, and are expected to be back two weeks before the fight. Bautista (21-0, 16 KO's) was originally set to face WBO superbantamweight king Daniel Ponce De Leon for the 'World Cup' on March 17, but the fight had to be postponed middle of this year after Ponce De Leon's camp stated they did not want to face Bautista in the Philippines. When reached for comment regarding the postponement of his fight, Bautista stressed: "I am disappointed, but I can't do nothing about it. I am now training for my next fight as if it is still a world title bout." The fight will be Bautista's first in the Philippines since stopping Tanzanian Obote Ameme in late-2005 at the Carlos P. Garcia Complex in Tagbilaran, Bohol. Last year, Bautista saw action only twice after an injury and a flu virus sidelined him for several months. Both fights took place in the United States. Gorres, meanwhile, also seemed happy to get an earlier date for his bout with Montiel, noting that finally, the world will see who is the best in the 115-lb division. "Now, we will see how I am going to perform against Montiel," Gorres said, noting that he had personally seen Montiel fight in person, and found nothing to be alarmed about the Mexican's fighting style. |
