NBA -- Heat vs. Bulls kick off 2013-14 season By Kelly Manalo PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 Aug 2013 ![]() CHICAGO -- The 2013-14 NBA season officially unfolds on October 29 with the two-time defending champions Miami Heat taking on the Chicago Bulls in a nationally-televised triple-header. The Heat will receive their second consecutive championship rings as the Bulls look to spoil their celebration. This game will also see the return of Bulls superstar Derrick Rose. Rose, a former MVP has not played in an NBA game since tearing his ACL in the first round of the 2012 Playoffs. He sat out for the whole season last year with fans hoping he would make his return against the Heat for their second round matchup. The comeback never came and the Bulls lost to the Heat in five games of a hotly-contested Eastern Conference semifinals. With his extended absence, this opening night's attraction builds more anticipation for fans after Rose confirmed suiting up against the Heat. Though only the first of a marathon 82-game schedule, the Heat-Bulls duel could potentially be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals. Both teams have added vital pieces that will hopefully become meaningful parts in this growing rivalry. The Heat retained the services of streak shooter Ray Allen and Chris Anderson, who made big plays to help them defend their championship. But the big acquisition was free agent Greg Oden as the 7-foot center signed a two year deal. The oft-injured Oden has played only 82 games in his six year career. The Bulls on the other hand have lost key contributors Nate Robinson and Marco Bellinelli, but with Rose's return and emergence of Jimmy Butler, the Bulls look to be contenders once again. They also added sharpshooter Mike Dunleavy Jr. and rookies Tony Snell and Erik Murphy. The rivalry seems to be growing between both teams as we seen in last year's contests. The Bulls won the regular season series 2-1. One of the defining moments for the Bulls came when they snapped the historic 27 game winning streak of the Heat during the regular season. It was intensified in the playoffs when Nazr Mohammad shoved LeBron James to the ground after a foul and the United Center crowd went insane. LeBron and company are eyeing a 3-peat in this upcoming season while the Bulls hope to be the perfect foil. (KM) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Kelly Manalo. ![]() |
