NBA -- Suns vs Warriors for Summer League title By Kelly Manalo PhilBoxing.com Mon, 22 Jul 2013 LAS VEGAS -- The final two teams are set to compete for the inaugural NBA summer league championship Monday night at the Thomas and Mack Center here in Las Vegas. The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors will face off after the Suns beat the Miami Heat in Game 1, 91-89, and the Warriors defeated the Charlotte Bobcats, 73-67. In the first game, the Heat took on the Phoenix Suns. Both teams started off well, raining down threes early. They combined to hit a total of eight baskets from long distance with the Suns being up three to end the quarter. The Suns began to run away in the third quarter, hitting from all angles inside and out. The Suns shot 56 percent from the field while Miami struggled with just 34 percent and trailed by 14 at the break. P.J. Tucker, who led the Suns with 19 points, started the second half with back-to-back threes, then Kendall Marshall threw a beautiful alley-oop pass to Marcus Morris for a two-handed slam, pushing the lead to 20. It all changed midway through the third as Phoenix started playing sloppy turning the ball over and the Heat capitalized by chopping their deficit to five entering the fourth quarter. Phoenix was able to gain back control and upped the bubble to 11 but James Ennis of Miami led his team back with 25 points. The long ball kept Miami close and with four minutes to go James Nunnally finally gave the Heat the lead with a clutch three. Nunnally chipped in 24. The contest was tied 89 all in the final minute when Markief Morris drove the lane hard and finished with the go ahead lay-in. Miami had a chance but turned it over with Phoenix marching to the championship. The second game featured the Golden State Warriors facing the Charlotte Bobcats. Both teams struggled out the gate as they could not find their rhythm offensively. It was low scoring as they combined for eight turnovers but many fumbled passes that led to bad shots. The Bobcats shot 25 percent and the Warriors weren?t any better at 32 percent. The score after one period was 19-13 in favor of the Warriors. The Warriors led throughout the game but never looked as if their lead was safe. They were ahead by as many as 12 but the careless play from the Warriors kept the Bobcats in it. The Bobcats finally cut the lead to two points in the third quarter but the Warriors hit a clutch 3 to keep the game in their favor. The play from both teams was very sloppy and it affected the crowd. The fans did not seem interested as they stayed in their seats even when free promotions were offered like shirts and prizes. In the end, the Warriors pulled out the victory getting a big slam from Kent Bazemore to put the nail in the coffin. Draymond Green had the best overall game for the Warriors putting up 15 points and snatching 12 rebounds. The Bobcats only shot 35 percent for the entire game. The Warriors are the number 1 seed overall and still undefeated in summer league play. (KM) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Kelly Manalo. ![]() |
