NBA -- Miami beats Cleveland, nears title By Kelly Manalo PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Jul 2013 ![]() LAS VEGAS -- Day 9 of Summer League play kicked off with the Miami Heat defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 82 ? 76, in the championship bracket here at the Thomas and Mack Center. The game was very slow paced as both teams struggled to find their offense early. The Heat came out with the defensive strategy to trap early and often to force quick turnovers, forcing the Cavs with 17 while making only 15. This helped Miami maintain the lead throughout the game, leading by as many as 15 points. The referees established right from the start that they were going to call the game tight, which may have led to the poor offensive production as both teams seemed to struggle to score effectively. There were a total of 54 fouls called on both teams. The Heat were more aggressive than the Cavs getting to the line 31 times compared to 22 attempts. The crowd got less enthused as the game went on, and though the players from both teams made fantastic drives and passes, these plays were few and far between. The disappointment from the fans could be heard with every missed opportunity. There were only six fast break points total for both teams. An alley-oop from the Miami team finally brought the crowd into the game in the fourth quarter as Cleveland was trying to mount a comeback. The Cavs brought the score within single digits behind the strong play of forward Justin Harper, who led all players with 21 points. He drained a big 3 pointer to cut the lead to five. They were able to force back to back shot clock violations but could not convert anything after. Miami?s balanced attack and smothering defense were enough to keep the surging Cavs at bay. Five players from the Heat scored in double figures. The Miami Heat look to take home the inaugural championship of the NBA summer league as they reach the final four and await their opponents. Cleveland goes home hoping the best is yet to come as they will have a new and improved roster since the LeBron James era.
