NBA - Bulls rookies shine over Mavericks By Kelly Manalo PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Jul 2013 LAS VEGAS -- As rain and thunder pelted the Cox Pavilion Friday night here in steaming Las Vegas, the Chicago Bulls edged the Dallas Mavericks, 94-87, in the final game of the consolation bracket. Rookies Tony Snell and Erik Murphy powered the Bulls with their strong plays. Murphy, a former Florida Gator, scored 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds. The 6'10 forward carried the Bulls in the opening quarter, showing a solid low post game and converted baskets in the paint and in traffic. He was also effective as a pick and pop player, hitting long distance shots from the top of the key. The Mavericks led throughout the first half and once built a ten-point advantage. Their leading scorer was Justin Dentmon, who had 23 points. They also got help from Guard Josh Akognon, who hit some big threes that weren't enough to overtake the Bulls in the end. The Bulls' 20th overall pick, Snell showed great range from beyond the arc. He finished the game with 20 points, nailing 5-of-8 from the three point line. He was constantly came off screens getting good shots off from three. His length and athleticism allowed to get free and shoot over the top of shorter defenders. ?I can?t wait for the season to start. I want to contribute what I can and be the shooter that the Bulls are needing,? Snell told reporters. Play was stopped midway through the third quarter as the rain came down outside of the arena, spilling onto the court and on the fans. It was quickly resolved and play continued with the Bulls down by only 2. The Bulls, who ended their summer league play with a 4-1 slate, pulled away in the fourth quarter. Center Matthew Bryan-Amaning made back to back post scores, including a nice reverse slam dunk. With momentum on their side, the Bulls' Snell then put the nail in the coffin with a big 3 in the final 1:05 of play. Guard Andrew Goudelock also played well with 22 points while sophomore guard Marquise Teague did not dress to play. (KM). Click here to view a list of other articles written by Kelly Manalo. ![]() |
