NBA Summer League: Knicks clip Clippers in consolation round play
By Kelly Manalo PhilBoxing.com Sat, 20 Jul 2013
LAS VEGAS - Day 8 of the NBA Summer League kicked off here with LA Clippers bowing to the New York Knicks, 91 - 80
Both teams played well and hard in this consolation round and provided highlight plays that energized the Cox Pavillion crowd on this humid day Friday afternoon.
The game was not as close as the box score indicated. The Knicks took an early lead through the first quarter and never relinquished it for the rest of the game. Justin Brownlee of the Knicks had a steal and dunk at the buzzer to end the sluggish first quarter start for both teams.
The Knicks used strong defense to hold the Clippers to 35% shooting from the field and 17% from long range. The Clippers took an overall 40 shots from long distance and never seemed to be able to get in the lane with the Knicks using their size and length to their advantage.
The big men of the Knicks did whatever they wanted to the undersized Clippers. They were able to shoot over the top and defend by getting the Clippers big men out on the perimeter. Points in the paint made a big difference as the Knicks had 54 points compared to the Clippers 34.
Jeremy Tyler dominated for the Knicks, leading the team with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting but it was the steal from Toure Murray in the second quarter that led him to throw a beautiful behind the back pass to the 6-10 forward for the monster throw down that brought the crowd on its feet. The Knicks converted all their fast break points and Tony Mitchell had two big dunks that sealed the victory for New York.
Los Angeles trailed by 21 and brought the game within single digits plenty of times but could never get those defensive stops to make a big run. Reggie Bullock of the Clippers led all players with 22 points. The former University of North Carolina Tar Heel tried to keep the game close hitting 3 of the 7 three pointers in the game but it was too little too late.
The Los Angeles Clippers end their summer league at 1-4 and the New York Knicks finish play at 2-3. (KM)
