TOP JAPANESE PROMOTER HONDA TO GRACE 'WORLD CUP' PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Jan 2007 When the 'World Cup' of boxing takes place on March 4 in Cebu City, expect Asia's most influential and biggest boxing promoter to be at ringside to watch all fistic action in what is groomed to be the biggest boxing spectacle in the history of Philippine boxing. Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda, who heads the giant Teiken Promotions of Tokyo, has reportedly agreed to sit at ringside with Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De la Hoya, ALA Boxing Gym's Antonio L. Aldeguer and SGG Promotion's Sammy Gello-ani when three world title bouts are unwrapped for the March 4 boxing spectacle. WBO vice-president for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo, in an interview, informed that Honda has agreed to come to Cebu for the event, and even felt honored for the special invitation given to him by the organizers and Golden Boy Promotions. "He told me that he was very honored for the invitation, and that he would grace the affair," Panoncillo said yesterday. The March 4 'World Cup' has already been given the green light by no less than WBO president Francisco 'Paco' Valcarcel of Puerto Rico, said Panoncillo. Promoter Gello-ani, in a revelation made to the media last Sunday, said that the card will feature three world title bouts, one inter-continental fight, and three non-title match-ups. The $500,000 Cup, which will be awarded to the winning country, is set to arrive either on the last week of January or early February, along with the world's most popular boxing icon Oscar De la Hoya and his business partners Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley. WBO superbantam boss Daniel Ponce De Leon will defend his title against the fire-breathing Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista in the 12-round main event which has all the international media in rapt attention. WBO superfly kingpin Fernando Montiel will also defend against the slick-punching Z 'The Dream' Gorres in what will be a boxing purist's delight which pits two technical fighters. If WBO bantam champion Jhonny Gonzalez continues to express apprehension in fighting Gerry Penalosa, organizers will put WBO light-flyweight champion Hugo Cazares either against Rodel Mayol or Bert Batawang. Undefeated Alex John Banal, who is US-bound on January 10, will also vie for the WBO Asia-Pacific Youth superfly title against another Mexican opponent. The other fighters seeing action are Jimrex Jaca, Diosdado Gabi and Mark Jason Melligen. |
