Davao Boxing Coaches Maul Cebu Ref

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL Santos City -- Two boxing coaches of Davao City mauled a referee from Cebu for earlier making a controversial decision against their boxer during the finals of the firstManny "PacMan" Pacquiao Cup National Amateur Boxing Championships last Wednesday at the Oval Plaza covered
court here.

Hours after the fight, national referee Paulino Pitogo was reportedly punched by former Southeast Asian Games medalist-turned coach Efren Decierto and former amateur and professional boxing champion Rio Sumampong near at the Family Country Hotel, owned by Amateur Boxing Association of the Phils. (Abap) GenSan president Rey Golingan.

The coaches got mad on the referee for declaring a knockout win on Davao del Norte's Jaime Quitoriano against Davao City's Ali Brasharey Cali in the first round of the 51-kilogram event.
Cali claimed that he was hit by a low blow and fell down on his knees at the corner. But Pitogo and the rest of the jury declared it as a legal blow after watching it in a replay on the video.

"Talagang legal blow yun kasi tumama sa may belt pa rin," said
tournament director Dante de Castro of Abap.

The ring officials said that Cali was only trying to act that he was hurt to get a win by disqualification on his opponent.
Cali punched several times the ring corner after the decision was made.

He reportedly wants to get even at Quitoriano, who also won in their previous encounter in Panabo City by disqualification when the former (Cali) landed a low blow and was disqualified.
"Gusto lang yata niyang makaganti. Nang matapos siya bigyan ng
mandatory count ng referee bigla siyang tumayo," said De Castro, who was also confronted by the coaches after the decision at the gym.

"Minura nila ako which is I can't tolerate para hindi sila tularan ng ibang coaches. I will push for an indefinite suspension on them including the boxer," he said.

However, after the mauling incident, the ABAP officials will now instead ban for life the two coaches, while the mauling incident was also reported to the police. Desierto was also already earlier banned in Panabo and Davao del Norte
for complaining and throwing invectives to the ring officials, while Sumampong's older brother Ronnie, a referee-judge was suspended by ABAP Region 11 director Celestino Revamonte for holding a tournament in Sta.

Cruz, Davao del Sur last November without the knowledge of ABAP Davao del Sur president Fely Latasan.

"We can not tolerate this kind of bad attitude in ABAP," de Castro said.
