DE LA HOYA SAYS MAYBE ARUM SHOULD RETIRE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 30 Nov 2006 Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya says Top Rank?s Bob Arum is probably near the end of his career and its ?going to be that time where Arum has to maybe retire.? De La Hoya made his feelings known in an overseas telephone call to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today in which he spoke about the legal battle over the promotional rights to Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao who signed a seven-fight contract with Golden Boy some two months before he reportedly signed a four-fight deal with Top Rank. De La Hoya said that after Pacquiao demolished Erik ?El Terrible? Morales in three rounds last November 18 it appeared to be the end of the Mexican?s illustrious ring career which meant that Arum had lost his biggest money earner and that is what drove him to try and sign up Pacquiao. Golden Boy claimed that his seven-fight deal with Pacquiao came into effect after the Morales fight and that in the fight contract of Arum for the Pacquiao-Morales fight ?it doesn?t stipulate that you cannot sign with another promoter.? De La Hoya emphasized that Pacquiao signed a ?fight contract with Arum but he did not sign a promotional contract with him.? The executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Keith Kizer informed Viva Sports/ Manila Standard Today "we do not have a copy of that contract" in reference to the four year deal Arum was talking about. De La Hoya said he wants the contract dispute resolved so Pacquiao ?can get back into training? for the rematch with WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera. He said ?I would hate for the fighter (Pacquiao) to be the loser in this whole situation. When I started promoting boxing its because the fighter has to come out on top? said De La Hoya adding ?that?s what we intend to do with Manny to make sure he is on top of everything.? One of the most popular champions of all-time De La Hoya emphasized that he really ?wants to look out for Manny?s best interests? which is why he gave the exciting southpaw the best deal any fighter could ever get. He said he wanted to talk to Pacquiao fighter-to-fighter and tell him ?Hey Manny stand up for yourself. You are the one who risks your life in the ring. You have to be the voice and speak for yourself and stand up. You have the opportunity to be one of the big success stories in boxing. You have to wake up because continuing like this you can end up like other fighters? whose careers have been ruined. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
