How the Bid Was Won PhilBoxing.com Wed, 29 Nov 2006 The Philippine boxing scene woke up to a very positive development the other day after it was first reported by Philboxing.com that Sammy Gello-ani's SGG Promotions had edged out Bob Arum in the purse bidding held at the WBO headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Gello-ani, Philboxing.com's Dong Secuya, CDN's Salven Lagumbay and Leon Panoncillo were having breakfast at the Wyndham Hotel (roughly about 3AM in RP), when Leon's phone rang. It was international matchmaker non-pareil Sampson Lewkowicz on the other line, speaking from PR, announcing the good news. In a matter of minutes, the news was up on Philboxing.com. That was a breaking news we just could not pass up. Here's a lowdown of how the purse bid played out, as reported by the WBO executive coordinator Doris Companys: Present at the purse bid were:1. Francisco Valcarcel, President WBO, presiding the purse bid; 2. Iv?n Rivera ? PR Best Boxing Promotions; 3. Peter Rivera ? representing Top Rank; 4. Sampson Lewkowicz ? representing SGG Promotions; 5. Manuel Marrero Hueca, WBO Administrative Advisor; 6. Coylette James ? Don King Productions; 7. Luis Batista Salas, WBO Championship Committee Chairman;8. Doris Companys, WBO Executive Coordinator and; 9. Jacqueline Torrent, WBO Events Coordinator. Mr. Valc?rcel stated for the record that Golden Boy Promotions, representing Champion Fernando Montiel, had sent a Federal Express with their bid envelopes. Mr. Valc?rcel asked if everyone was in agreement to open the Federal Express envelope. Everyone was in agreement. Mr. Valc?rcel opened the Federal Express reading Golden Boy?s letter and thus initiating the purse bid. Mr. Valc?rcel opened the first envelope stating for the record that Golden Boy was a bona fide promoter and showed that it held the $1,000.00 purse bid deposit fee. Mr. Valc?rcel then asked who was representing Z Gorres, to which Mr. Sampson Lewkowicz presented envelope one containing a letter from Samson Gelli Ani, from SGG Promotions, authorizing Mr. Lewkowicz to represent him. He also handed Mr. Valc?rcel the check for $1,000 representing the purse bid deposit fee. Mr. Valc?rcel then proceeded to accept the envelope one from Mr. Peter Rivera, which contained the letter authorizing Mr. Peter Rivera to represent Top Rank and the $1,000.00 purse bid deposit fee check. Mr. Valc?rcel stated for the record that all three were bona fide promoters. Mr. Valc?rcel then indicated for the record that each party was to provide a second envelope, including a written proposal indicating the total purse offered to the Champion and the Challenger, three proposed sites for the Championship Contest, and the proposed date for the Championship Contest, which is to be between 45 and 90 days from the present date. The proposal must also include a Purse Bond in the form of a certified check, cashier?s check or bank money order payable to the World Boxing Organization, or money in cash, in the legal tender of the United States of America (dollars) for an equivalent of Ten (10%) percent of the total of the proposed purse. The Purse Bond of the successful bidder shall be retained by the World Boxing Organization to secure the Champion, Challenger and the WBO in the event that the successful bidder fails to promote the Championship Contest pursuant to the Purse Bid without just cause. Then Mr. Valc?rcel opened the second envelope belonging to Golden Boy that contained $10,000.00 representing 10% of the purse offered of $100,000. The proposed site for the contest was the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada and the proposed date February 10, 2007. Mr. Lewkowicz then submitted his second envelope containing the purse bid amount of $126,000 and the check in the amount of $12,600, the proposed site, the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Philippines on the proposed date of February 17, 2007. Mr. Valc?rcel proceeded to open Mr. Rivera?s second envelope. The amount offered for the purse bid was $125,500 and the proposed dates were January 19, 2007, February 2, 2007 or February 16, 2007 and the proposed location was USA, Puerto Rico, or Philippines. Mr. Valc?rcel noted that Mr. Rivera had submitted a $12,550 check with his proposal. Mr. Valc?rcel then congratulated Mr. Lewkowicz and thanked all parties for participation in the Purse Bid.
