CHICAGO -- Playing their third game in four nights, the Chicago Bulls fought gallantly back from a 17-point deficit, only to fall short in overtime, 85-82, against the Memphis Grizzlies Saturday night at the United Center.
"The second quarter, we got in a big hole. We started the third and couldn't get organized. The hole got bigger, and the group that got in there sort of battled back so we were riding it out, seeing if we could find a way to creep back into it and have a chance to win in the end," Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau told the Chicago Tribune after his team fell to 23-16.
Down 54-37 with 4:09 left in the third quarter, the Bulls cam charging back hard and captured the upperhand, 75-72, courtesy of a Nate Robinson 3. But with still 1:33 to go in regulation, the Bulls couldn't hold on as Memphis overtime at 76-76. In the extra session, the Grizzlies unreeled six straight points and never looked back.
It was the Bulls' third consecutive overtime game. They beat the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night in Canada and edged past the Celtics Friday night in Boston. Next up for the Bulls are the star-studded Los Angeles Monday night at the United Center.
Memphis' twin towers, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, combined for 32 points and 18 rebounds. Sweet-shooting Rudy Gay talied 16 while point guard Mike Conley added 13 and nine assists.
Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 18. Carlos Boozer added yet another double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Nate Robinson dinished with 11 while Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah had 10 each. Sidelined by a hamstring injury, Bulls' small forward Luol Deng did not play (HDS)
