NBA -- Mavericks dethrone Kings, stay above water

PhilBoxing.com

CHICAGO -- Life without injured superstar Dirk Nowitzki has been a tremendous challenge for the Dallas Mavericks, who were barely floating in the rough Western Conference waters and logging just an average 10-10 record entering Monday night's schedule.

But playing at home at the American Airlines Center provided some much-craved relief.

In match-up between once-mighty West superpowers, the Dallas Mavericks easily handled the visiting Sacramento Kings, 119-96. The defeat marked the 7-13 Kings' 17th consecutive loss at Dallas' homecourt.

Holding just a slim 29-28 lead with 2:02 left in the first quarter, the Mavericks went on a blistering 36-15 run that gave them a sizeable 65-43 halftime advantage. The Kings, who had won three straight entering Dallas, couldn't recover as the team shot only 37-of-84 field goals (44 percent) and 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.

The Kings also flubbed six of 16 free throws and committed 19 turnovers against Dallas' eight. Sacramento won the rebounding battle, 43-38, but the Mavs whipped more assists, 26-22.

The Mavs missed 13 of 20 threes, but they netted 48 of their 87 field goals (55.2 percent) and 16 of 21 free throws. O.J. Mayo led six Mavs in double figures with 19. Center Kaman. who played with a gimpy ankle, chipped in 18 and three rebounds while Darren Collison added 15. Dahntay Jones, Jae Crowder and the newly-acquired free agent veteran Derek Fisher each finished with 11.

Center DeMarcus Cousins and Francisco Garcia had 25 points apiece for Sacramento. (Homer D. Sayson)
