NBA -- Memphis keeps grisly streak going
By Ryan Medida PhilBoxing.com Fri, 02 Nov 2012

SAN FRANCISCO -- Playing the first game of the regular season has never been a good thing for the Memphis Grizzlies, who have lost 11 Opening Night encounters in a row. And that ugly streak stretched to 12 Wednesday night when they lost their 2012-13 season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers, 101-92, at the Staples Center.
Jamal Crawford, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year in 2010, was brought in during the off season to further enhance the Clippers already volatile offense. That's exactly what the streaky 32-year old guard did --- score big off the bench to help Los Angeles put away a stubborn Memphis five.
The 32-year old Crawford fired 29 points in a mere 29 minutes and 51 seconds of action. Crawford, who had previous stints with the Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks and most recently the Portland TrailBlazers, sank 10 of 14 field goals including 3-of-7 beyond the 3-point arc. He also drilled 6-of-8 free throws.
With Crawford carrying the Clippers on his slender shoulders, resident superstars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul didn't have to do much heavy lifting. Griffin had 11 points and seven rebounds while Paul logged 12 points and 12 assists. Eric Bledsoe also added 13 for Los Angeles, which converted 38 of 74 field goals.
"I thought our bench was the real difference tonight. Jamal Crawford, you can tell one of the reasons we brought him here is that he's an explosive scorer. He made some big shots," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro told ESPN.com of his prized jewel off the bench.
The Big 3 of Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph supplied the Memphis offense with 60 points. but the Grizzlies simply couldn't get going offensively. Memphis missed 53 of 86 field goals and connected on just two of 14 threes while making 24 of 30 free throws. (Ryan Medida)
