MARES VS MORENO FOR WBC SUPER BANTAM TITLE NOV 10 @ STAPLES CENTER

PhilBoxing.com

Mexico's Abner Mares, the unbeaten WBC Super Bantamweight World champion will make the first defense of his newly acquired green/golden belt against talented WBA bantamweight super champion Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno of Panama in a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast on November 10 @ the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, Golden Boy Promotions has announced.

The 26 year-old 2-division Mexican world champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13KO's), coached by legendary Hall-of-Fame Mexican trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, is well-remembered by fans for his two 12-round dramatic world title wars with tough Ghanian Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko, fights in which low-blows were the rampant. Mares prevailed in both exciting slugfests.

The Guadalajara native captured the vacant WBC super bantamweight crown by outpointing veteran Puertorrican Eric Morel last April in El Paso, Texas.

Meanwhile, Panama's Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (33-1-1, 12KO's), reigning WBA world bantamweight champion since May of 2008, will be stepping up for the first time in the 122 lbs. division to face Mares.

However, Moreno's 118 lbs. WBA world title will not be in play:

"Moreno was granted a special permission from the WBA," informed to this author Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, vice-president of the World Boxing Association (WBA).

Widely considered as the best bantamweight in the world, "Chemito Moreno is a highly skillful southpaw who has successfully defended his bantamweight world title 10 times, mostly in the Latin America and Europe circuits.

Moreno's last win was in April, a round 9 technical KO victory over Tijuana fighter David de la Mora (24-2, 17KO's) in El Paso, Texas.

Even though they have fought in different parts of the world, there is one common opponent shared by Mares and Moreno: "The Raging Bull" Vic Darchinyan.

Mares, a former Olympian who in the past suffered a detached retina, won a narrow split decision over the veteran Armenian two years ago in Tacoma, Washington, while Moreno handsomely dominated the aggressive Darchinyan in a landslide unanimous decision win last December in Anaheim, California.

Mares and Moreno are promoted by Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and have headlined together in two successful SHOWTIME telecasts, the first one on December 3, then on April 21.

Mares-Moreno tickets priced starting at $25 (not including applicable service charges and taxes) go on sale Tuesday October 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. PT and will be available for purchase at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the STAPLES Center Box Office.
