Stunning Victories and Shameful Predictions By Edward Ligas PhilBoxing.com Wed, 22 Aug 2012 Last Saturday, Cebuano boxing fans and the whole nation was treated with another world class boxing promoted by ALA Promotions and the giant television network ABS-CBN. It was a jam-packed crowd inside the Grand Ball Room of Waterfront Hotel and Casino, in Lahug, Cebu City for Pinoy Pride XV Philippines vs. Mexico: The Rematch. Headlining the boxing extravaganza was Jason Pagara against Rosbel Montoyo. SWEET REVENGE It was almost a year when Jason Pagara was out boxed and out punched by Rosbel Montoya, who was the only Mexican warrior that won in the Pinoy Pride series thus far. With his experience, Montoya gave Pagara a boxing lesson en route a unanimous decision in their first meeting. Pagara was devastated and claimed to have personal problems which resulted in lack of training and preparation. Those personal problems were only known to Pagara. But ALA Boxing stable gave Pagara another chance to redeem himself and gave him a tune-up fight against an Indonesian opponent whom he dismantled in just four rounds in scheduled eight round competition. The victory has given so much confidence on him. He personally asked Michael Aldeguer, the President and CEO of ALA Promotions for a rematch against his tormentor Montoya. During the interview on this scribe a week before the fight, he was confident in predicting for a knockout in the rematch. Indeed, he was not short in his predictions when they met Montoya last Saturday. In the opening round, Pagara unleashed a vicious right hook to the mid-section of Montoya which floored the latter. But the Mexican warrior beat the count of eight and continued to fight. Montoya adjusted and came back in the second round with his own flurries but Pagara tightened his defense. In the third round, again Montoya hit the canvas twice after Pagara's solid body punches. But he was able to continue without a sign of any surrender. The sixth round was the last hurrah for the Mexican warrior as he was again knocked down from Pagara's combinations to the body which referee Danrex Joseph Tapdasan, timely stopped the fight to save Montoya from further punishment. He was not the same Montoya, we saw in the first encounter and Jason Pagara proved that he can beat his tormentor provided he has no personal problems. It was a sweet revenge for Cagayan de Oro pug, who claimed the WBO International Junior Welterweight Belt. I know that Montoya experiencing an excruciating pain as he walked outside the ring. WINNING STREAK In other fight, Genesis "Asukal " Servania, continues his winning streak by claiming the WBO Asia Pacific Super Bantamweight Belt against tough and durable Mexican Jorge "El Peroz" Pazos in highly thrilling fight. In the opening round, a strong right overhand from Servania floored Pazos to the canvas but the Mexican quickly beat the count. The action continues as Servania surgically found the mark, while Pazos, always retreating, was caught by a devastating right hook to the mid-section which sent him again to the canvas in the eight round. Although, he was out boxed and outclassed, the gallant Mexican continued the fight. In round eleven, another knockdown was registered everybody thought that was the end, but he survived the ordeal until the last seconds of twelve rounds. To his credit, the former fish vendor and soft-spoken warrior from Bacolod City has slaughtered four Mexicans in the name of Gerson Guerrero, Marcos Cardenas, Genaro Garcia, the real one, and lately the stablemate of Cardenas, Jorge Pazos. This young prospect of ALA Boxing Stable has already established his own name on his credit by giving an exciting and excellent fight every time he enters the ring. THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON This scribe called him the Prodigal Son, after he went to different boxing stables and was inactive in boxing scene for more than a year. But his real name is Jimrex "The Executioner" Jaca, a product of ABS-CBN boxing regional grassroots boxing competition. He gave Juan Manuel Marquez a hell of a fight six years ago before he was knocked out in the ninth round in El Paso Texas. Before the fight, Jaca was offended by the statement of his opponent Angel "Arcangel" Matinez, saying that Jaca has no power despite his previous victories by knockouts. But Martinez vehemently denied making such statement. But what added insult to injury was the statement of Panamanian boxing writer Carlos Costa, when he described Jaca as beer belly after he failed to get the weight in his first try. Martinez who fought against reigning WBA champion Lucas Mathyss, looked lean and easily made the weight. During the fight night, Jaca, with a grip of toxic emotions, battered Martinez and even floored the Mexican with a vicious left hook to the body in the third round. In contrast, the Mexican looked awkward and could not hit the mark. Jaca who was inactive for more than a year had not shown any sign of rustiness and instead threw combinations with proficiency and accuracy. The last round was more intense as the Mexican wanted to bounce back knowing he was behind on points. He was aggressive in attacking but Jaca perfectly countered with a strong right straight which sent Martinez to the canvas with one second left in the final round. The Mexican grimaces in pain and failed the mandatory eight count. Jaca won by knockout and proved himself that he can still pull the trigger for possible world title shot. The Sibulan warrior erased the doubts of his critics and now back in good hands with ALA promotions. SHAMEFUL PREDICTIONS The Pinoy Pride XV was hounded by controversies and hype before the fight, when Panamanian writer Carlos Costa, the alleged Latino Defender predicted that the Mexican boxers will sweep against the Filipino boxers for the reasons that Mexican looked great during the weigh-in.
