CANTADA'S LETTER TO GAB

PhilBoxing.com

Here's the letter sent to Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chair Eric Buhain by boxing promoter Edgardo 'Boy' Cantada, and for the benefit of our readers, Philboxing.com is reprinting it here with permission from Mr. Cantada himself:

I am writing this letter in strong protest to the arbitrary increase by the GAB of the boxing ring officials' compensation on boxing promotion.

In my last boxing promotion held on September 17, 2006, I was charged by the GAB the total amount of P31,800 whereas in a previous boxing promotion held on April 23, 2006 in Bagumbayan, Taguig City I was charged the total amount of P9,480 only. The charges are broken down as follows with a comparison to ring officials' compensation paid in previous boxing promotion:

For the referees' compensation on non-championship bouts, I was charged P800 per bout irregardless whether the bout was a four-rounder or a ten-rounder. In my previous promotion I was charged P40 per round or P160 for a four-rounder and P400 for a ten-rounder.

For the judges' compensation on non-championship bouts, I was charged P400 per bout for a total of P1,200 per bout (3 judges per bout) irregardless whether the bout was a four-rounder or a ten-rounder for a total of P10,800 for the full boxing card of nine bouts. In previous promotion I was charged a flat rate of P2,000 for the full boxing card.

For the ring announcers, I was charged P2,000. Previously it was P1,500.

For the time-keepers, I was charged P1,500. Previously I was charged P750.

For the ring physicians, I was charged P6,000 for two (2) physicians. Previously I was charged P2,000 for two (2) physicians.

From the above figures, you will notice excessive and disproportionate increase in charges particularly in referees' and judges' compensation. Why should a promoter pay the same excessive amount for a four-rounder and a ten-rounder bout? I am, hereby, enclosing photocopies of GAB receipts on ring official's compensation on my April 23, 2006 and September 17, 2006 promotions.

What shocked me was the absence of any consultation regarding this very serious matter or, the very least, an earlier notice to its effect. The charges were presented to me at the boxing event itself.

I would like to call your attention, also, to the fact that I have been paying compensation for two (2) physicians in my boxing promotions when it has been very obvious that only one (1) physician has always been in attendance.

I do not wish to contest this arbitrary move on the part of your good office. I could have agreed to a reasonable rate of increase in compensation. Instead, I have decided to leave professional boxing altogether. In my more than four years of involvement in professional boxing, I have been very honest and fair in my dealings, particulary with the boxers. I have never charged any admission fees in any of my boxing promotions.

I have been very successful in my boxing promotions and in projecting Filipino professional boxing, through television, with my rated weekly program "FISTORAMA". This is not only shown nationwide on RPN-9 but worldwide, as well, through my partnership with ABS-CBN Global Ltd's The Filipino Channel. I wish I could say the same thing, financially.

It is very unfortunate that your office would implement such an arbitrary measure when professional boxing is barely surviving. Let me remind you, sir, that only Manny Pacquiao's fights/promotions make money nowadays.

I am shifting my efforts to amateur boxing where I do not expect harsh and unwarranted policies. I will still continue to promote Philippine boxing nationwide/worldwide. Only this time, it will be amateur boxing.

I do intend to ventilate the above issue on Philippine media, (of which I am very much a part of), by explaining why I decided to leave professional boxing.

Promoter/TV Producer
