BOXING FANS AROUND THE WORLD WERE ROBBED

PhilBoxing.com

It was a sad day for boxing when boxing superstar and pound for pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, (54-4-38-2) lost by a controversial split decision against unheralded Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley (28-0-12) in a fight clearly dominated by the champion. Veteran Judges CJ Ross and Duane Ford had Bradley 115-13 while Jerry Roth saw 115-113 it for Pacquaio.

In the first two rounds, Bradley was the aggressor pressuring Pacquiao and thrown combinations to the head and the body. But in third round, Pacquiao surprised Bradley with his vaunted left hook which changed the complexion of the fight. From there, Pacman controlled the tempo of the fight where he staggered and pummeled the challenger with right straights and left uppercuts. In several instances, Bradley had to clinch just to survive the onslaught from the champion. Both fighters had their flurries but Pacman got the better of the exchanges. It was only in the 10th round, when Pacquaio appeared to relax that Bradley clearly dominated the round. The 12th round was so close but I gave it to Bradley for fighting gamely and bravely in front of the 16,000 fans inside the MGM Grand Arena. I watched the PPV at Norkis Club House together with Congressman Luigi Quisumbing and other political leaders in the sixth district, in the province of Cebu.

This scribe, who is also an international boxing judge, scored the fight 116-112 for the Pacman. It was a scintillating performance from the champion despite fading in the later rounds. It was not close but a one-sided fight as observed by boxing experts even by the ordinary fans. But when the verdict was read everybody was stunned including Bradley, who admitted being hurt by those power punches. The fans were shocked and in total disbelief by the results of the score cards. Maybe the judges, who occupied the best seats at the ringside, were watching a different fight. It was a double whammy for Pacquiao, whose wife and children watched at the ringside. Before the fight, his favorite NBA team Boston Celtics lost to Miami Heat in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Boxing fans around the world, especially the Filipinos, were robbed. They were disappointed and infuriated by the judges as my good friend said "surambao". I hope this is not part of boxing Mafia plan and Bob Arum has no part of the whole scheme including the three judges. And the judges should review their manuals for boxing officials like effective aggressiveness, telling blows and power punches and ring generalship. It seemed they lost their criteria for judging. Bradley, who is the challenger should not only be aggressive but should win convincingly to be declared as a champion.

This travesty act of the judges will certainly kill the sport of boxing in the future and Filipinos will always fight against injustice and exploitation.
