Quintero (24-3, 20 KOs) from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico for the International Boxing Federation lightweight title eliminator. Though ranked higher by the IBF, the 5-foot-7 pride of Touch Gloves Boxing Gym in Agoncillo, Batangas is tag underdog against Quintero as they exchange punches April 21 at the Unidad Deportiva Centenario, Morelia, Michoac?n de Ocampo in Mexico City. ??It?s a go,?? said Sabaupan handler and Saved by the Bell Promotions president Elmer Anuran. ??If Al can survive the earlier rounds, then he has a very good chance of besting Quintero. ??He?s determined to win this fight and give honors to his country and fellow Bicolanos,?? added Anuran, who will join Team Captain A in Mexico City. The 23-year-old native of Sipocot, Camarines Sur trained hard for this bout and will have the veteran Benny de la Pena and Boy Donaire as cornermen. Sabaupan trained at Touch Gloves Boxing Gym in Agoncillo, Batangas and Shape-Up in Baguio City. Also joining the group is SBB vice-president Danny Anuran. Sabaupan is the reigning IBF Pan Pacific lightweight titleholder. Both hard punching southpaws, the winner will earn a crack at the 135-pound diadem being held by Miguel V?zquez (30-3, 13 KOs). ??It?s going to be a very tough fight for Al. Quintero?s record is impressive. But he trained very well for this golden opportunity to earn a crack at the world crown,?? said Anuran. The bout is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions in cooperation with Zanfer Promotions. Sabaupan is unfazed that the Mexican has vowed to end the game early. ??I know that to do. He?s the favorite because he will fight infront of his countrymen but I?ll fight anywhere in the world to gain international recognition.I am ready to rumble,?? Sabaupan said. Sabaupan will stake his unblemished slate of 18-0-1, 13 KOs. Meanwhile, remember boxer Mark Joseph Costa? The peppery boxer from La Trinidad, Benguet shot into national attention when his opponent Karlo Maquinto went into coma and died due to brain injury as a result of their heated clash in a local promotion last January 28 at Caloocan City. The death of Maguinto sparked renewed interest from well-known personalities led by ring icon Manny Pacquiao and Senator Koko Pimentel to promote the safety of the sport. Last Sunday, Costa, visibly unaffected by the Maquinto incident, fought gallantly but lost by technical knockout to up and coming flyweight Lolito Sonsona in the jampacked Ala Eh boxing card at the Agoncillo Sports Complex in Agoncillo, Batangas. Sonsona, who fights out of Touch Gloves Boxing Gym, stunned Costa with a flurry of punches to the head and body, forcing the referee to stop the fight in the fifth round. Thus, Sonsona, improved his record to 16-1-1, including five knockouts, while Costa dropped to 4-5-2, 1 knockout. Among the spectators in the card put up by Saved by the Bell Promotions was Anson Tiu Co, Maquinto?s manager. ??It was a normal bout for me.I wasn?t unafraid. I just followed the instruction of my corner,?? said Sonsona. The Sonsona-Maquinto fight a one of the supporting events for the main event topbilled by fast-rising super featherweight Roberto Gonzales of the Saved by the Bell Promotion and Dante Paulino. Gonzales knocked out Paulino in the first round to improve his mark to 20-0-0, including 11 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dennis U. Eroa. ![]() |
