LUCKY SUNDAY FOR DOMINGO
Scores RP?s lone stoppage win in Philippines vs. Mexico showdown

PhilBoxing.com

QUEZON CITY - The vastly-improved RP bantamweight champion Michael Domingo proved he is a worthy replacement of his sparring mate and ALA Stable sensation Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista after he scored RP?s lone victory by stoppage in the ?Mano-a-Mano? card featuring Philippine fighters against Mexicans yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Domingo pulled off an impressive seventh round TKO win over many-time world challenger Alejandro Felix Montiel as the Pinoys led by Manny Pacquiao (see separate story) completed a 4-0 sweep over their Mexican rivals.

Earlier, former WBC super flyweight titlist Gerry Penalosa showed he?s on the right track in his bid to become a world champion anew after he beat the crafty Tomas Rojas by decision, while ALA stalwart from Tagbilaran City Czar Amonsot pounded out a one-side 10-round shutout of Silverio Ortiz. Also, Jimrex Jaca of Rex ?Wakee? Salud Stable won by technical decision at 2:08 of the seventh round against Hector Marquez. The matched was stopped after nasty cut over jACA'S left eye, which he sustained in his previous Japan fight, reopenedbecause of an accidental head-butt.

The most interesting bout, however, was credited to Domingo, who was tabbed to replace Bautista after the Boholano ring phenomenon pulled out of the mammoth card because of a bacterial flu. Domingo did not let Bautista down as he went on to show one of his finest performances in his career. The Sultan Kudarat-native fighter sprinted to a sizzling start and landed a solid right hand smack on Montiel?s face that send the Mexican down on both knees midway in the first round.

Domingo mercilessly clobbered Montiel in the succeeding rounds until in the fateful round 7 when the referee intervened and wave off the bout to prevent the Mexican from further damage.

?I?m so happy that I was able to prove I?m a worthy replacement of Bautista. Even before the start of the bout, I was confident of beating him although I didn?t not expect it will come this way,? said Domingo. The victory will surely be a morale-booster for Domingo, who is set to defend his RP crown against
former ALA Boxing Gym standout Johnny Lear on July 15 at Metropolis Mall in Alabang.

?I?m happy for him. He really showed tremendous improvement since he hooked up with us two years ago,? said international promoter Sammy Gello-ani.

Interestingly, Domingo is 8-0 under the aegis of Gello-anis?s SGG Stable. Overall, Domingo holds a 28-13-3 (13KOs) record. Montiel dropped to a 51-8 (30KOs).
