Tarona edges Alba in Balayan!
By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Jun 2006
Veteran boxer and former Philippine Bantamweight Champion Julius Tarona proved that he still has a lot of gas left in his tank when he squeaked past hard-hitting Rodney ?Jun? Alba in an abbreviated fight that was stopped due to a cut suffered by Tarona.
This super-featherweight fight scheduled for 10 rounds was the main attraction of a three-bout professional card held last night in the historic town of Balayan, Batangas. The card was part of the event dubbed ?Matira ang Matibay?, which also included matches between amateur boxers, held in connection with the town?s present festivities.
The fight was never lacking in excitement from start to finish as both fighters were mixing it up at every moment with a lot of momentum swings in each round. While Alba was hitting Tarona with ripping hooks to the head and body, Tarona was scoring clean uppercuts to the chin of Alba almost at will.
By the end of the third round, a cut was inflicted above the right eye of Tarona. The cut most likely came from a punch as there was no prior incident of a heat-butt nor was any ruling made by the referee of its occurrence. The cut was aggravated in the sixth round when Alba accidentally head-butted Tarona after which Referee Silvestre Abainza halted the fight to have the cut checked by the ringside physician, Dr. Nasser Cruz. When Dr. Cruz (who incidentally, is now the Chief of Boxing Division of GAB) signaled that the condition of the cut was way too dangerous to continue the bout, the fight went to the judges? scorecards.
In the end, it was Tarona?s accuracy that won him the fight earning a unanimous decision with scores of 48-47 (twice), and 49-47.
In another bout in the light-flyweight division, Mark Vito of Trece Martirez, Cavite, used his superior movement in defeating Truman Matti, also via a unanimous decision.
In the curtain raiser featuring two bantams, Leonardo Doronio defeated Jed Aragata via a 1st round TKO.
