Filipino's Ondangan and Bryant Wins US Chess Tourney

Filipino-American FIDE Master John Daniel Bryant and former University of Manila (UM) standout, US National Master Ruben Ondangan Jr. tied for first at the recently concluded 2011 Antelope Valley Master's Open Chess Championship in Lancaster, California.
FM Bryant, an All-America Team Member, finalist at the US Juniors Closed Championship and winner of several Juniors and State Titles, drew his exciting 3rd round match-up with NM Ondangan, a certified US Chess Master who was best known for winning the 2004 Hawaii Open and the 2011 Santa Monica FIDE Tournament last January. Both won their last round games against Las Vegas Expert Sergio Marcelo (another Filipino campaigner) and Palmdale ace Arthur Thomas Williams respectively.
Their 3.5 points in four outings showcased their class and supremacy in the field. Senior Master Mick Bighamian, President and founder of Los Angeles Chess Club said; " with FM Bryant I'm not too surprised anymore ... but NM Ruben Ondangan, after gaining his Master's title early this year is becoming a force to reckon with in Southern California."
The event was sponsored by AV Checkmate Chess Club, in cooperation with the Lancaster Masonic Lodge, Dr. Sheldon Brooks, Mr. Richard Peterson and the Lancaster Christian Ministries Church.
