Juan Miguel Elorde loses in US debut; Pinoy fighters go 2-1 on eve of Pacquiao bout

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, Nevada - Juan Miguel Elorde 10-0 (4 KOs) failed to make it a clean sweep for all three Filipino fighters seeing action tonight at a Top Rank promoted card here at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. While his compatriots, Allan Tanada and Mercito Gesta came up successful with their respective matches. The grandson of the great Flash Elorde faltered in his US debut in a 4 round Super Bantamweight match against fellow unbeaten fighter Jerry Guevara 6-0 (5 KOs) of Brownsville, TX.

Elorde and Guevara both started the first round tentatively. It was a "feeling out" round as both fighters tested each other's strategy of the fight. They started exchanging in the second round with Elorde catching Guevara with his right hand. Guevara got dropped in one exchange but referee Russell Mora ruled it as a slip.

Guevara then started using his jab which was clearly lacking in the young Filipino fighter's arsenal. Guevara was able to sneak in some stinging jabs that landed flushed on Elorde's face. He was also able to follow that up with some straights as Elorde's lack of defense made it easier for him to hit the fighter from Paranaque. Elorde also, does not want to keep his hands up during exchanges with Guevara. He was also tentative at times to be offensive, preferring to feint and counter against the pressing opponent.

One judge gave all four rounds to Guevara while the other two had it a little closer at 39-37 for the now 7-0 Texan fighter. Elorde suffers his first lost in 11 outings. This should not discourage the young Elorde from fighting more fights, but he needs to improve on his defense and must absolutely learn how to jab. He should not stop going to the gym in order to develop and acquire new skills that will help him in the ring in his upcoming fights. He also needs to continue fighting, preferably in local cards in the Philippines so he gets that experience in the ring that will be useful if he pursues another fight out of the country.
