Cesar Gonzales Ready to "Fight For Hope" on May 21 at Sovereign Center in Reading PhilBoxing.com Sun, 15 May 2011 READING, PA (May 15, 2011) - Before Cesar Gonzales of Reading, PA steps into the ring on May 21 at the Sovereign Center?s Reading Eagle Theater for his four-round junior-lightweight bout on King?s Boxing?s ?Fight For Hope? card, Gonzales will have already won his own personal fight for hope. The five year Reading resident Gonzales is making his pro debut at the advanced age of 35 after just a single amateur bout. Gonzales admits that he is turning pro late due to a series of ?bad choices? that led to him spending nearly ten years of his adult life behind bars. It could have turned out much worse for Gonzales. Gonzales? journey started in Coney Island, NY, and it nearly ended there as well. Gonzales was twice the victim of shooting incidents ? once in 1994 when he was shot twice in the back, and again in 2002 when he was shot in the pelvis which shattered his femur bone. Realizing he was heading in the wrong direction, Gonzales wised up and returned to the sport his father introduced him to at age 13 to help him thwart his bullying problem. ?I'm grateful to God for the blessing, because when I got shot the doctors said I would not walk the same, let alone box again and here I am proving them wrong,? said Gonzales, who will face fellow pro debut Osahon Omo-Osagie of State College, PA. Gonzales moved to Reading in 2006 and linked up with King?s Boxing Gym and head trainer Marshall Kauffman, who is promoting the event this Saturday. ?I made a commitment to him that I would make his dream come true to turn him pro, so he?s going to make the most of this opportunity,? said Kauffman. ?He?s just a humble individual, a little older and more mature so he appreciates things better than a younger kid would. He?s worked very hard and I know he?ll make Reading proud.? To compensate for lost time and a limited amateur background, Gonzales has sparred with many top fighters, including WBC featherweight champion Elio Rojas, as well as unbeaten New York City prospects Shemuel Pagan and Gabriel ?Tito? Bracero. Aside from boxing, Gonzales also holds a job with asbestos abatement for Crest Environmental Services, removing the dangerous carcinogenic substance from homes and businesses. Despite the long shot odds against him, Gonzales is determined to reach for the stars. After all, who could tell him he can?t achieve his dreams after what he?s already overcome? ?I want to win a world title because I don't think anyone ever turned pro at my age and had great success and I plan on doing that,? said Gonzales. ?I want to show people that just because we make bad choices in life, it doesn't mean we can?t still do great things. I want to help the kids do something good with their lives and help the same community I once was destroying.? The show's main event will feature Reading junior middleweight Keenan Collins (12-5-2, 8 KO) against Allentown's Jorge Delgado (4-9, 2 KO) in an eight-round fight. Also, 28-year-old Eliud Torres (4-2, 2 KO) of Allentown will also face Pottstown's Travis Thompson (4-7-1, 3 KO) in a six-round lightweight bout. Heavyweight William Miranda (2-3) of Allentown will also be in action, plus many more pro and amateur bouts. The night will also feature exciting musical performances by local singing talent Allie Santos of Allentown and Jeffrey Beauvais of Mohntan, PA. There will also be door prizes and giveaways at the event. The event will be sponsored by Everlast, Direct TV, and GMI First. Tickets, priced $50, $35 and $25 can be purchased by calling King's Boxing at 610-587-5950, Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or by going online at Ticketmaster.com.
