PINOY 'BERTO' EYES INTERNATIONAL STARDOM By Dennis U. Eroa PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 May 2011 UNBEATEN Roberto Gonzales makes the first step as he seeks international boxing stardom when he battles highly-respected Korean and current International Boxing Federation Pan-Pacific titleholder Jae Sung-Lee for the vacant WBA International superfeatherweight title. Dubbed as ??Berto??, the 21-year-old brawler comes from the long list of future world champions under the Saved by the Bell Promotions. ??I am ready and I want to win in style because this is the start of my bid to become a world titlist,?? said the 5-foot-7 Gonzales who sports an impressive 18-0 mark, including nine knock outs. The Gonzales-Jae Sung-Lee bout is scheduled on July 22 either at Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro or in Manila. A native of Romblon, Romblon, Gonzales latest victim was hard-fighting Rufino Mante. Gonzales won by 4th round TKO at Agoncillo, Batangas. Gonzales stablemate is former WBA super flyweight international titlist Drian Francisco who fell victim to biased judging in his first title defense against Thai fighter Tepparith Singwancha in Petchaburi, Thailand. Like, Gonzales, Francisco (20-1, 16 knock outs) is also expected to hug the limelight soon as he makes his comeback against another world-rated rival. Lee last fought and won against Ray Las Pi?as by majority decision last February at the Mungyeong Gymnasium in Korea. Before besting Las Pi?as, Lee lost by 6th round TKO to Jorge Diaz at the Yankee Stadium in New York, USA. ??This is going to a very good fight. Berto fights like former world champion Rolando Navarette. He is unafraid to fight toe-to-toe,?? said Saved by the Bell Promotions president Elmer Anuran. ?? The Korean, for sure, is no pushover. Lee is going to rumble.?? Lee has a record of 11-3-1, including seven knock outs. Gonzales spent most of his childhood days in Puerto Galera ferrying tourists on passenger boats before being discovered. He now trains at the Touch Gloves Boxing Gym in Agoncillo, Batangas. ??I want to make my townmates proud and happy,??said Gonzales when told that the fight may be held at Puerto Galera. Anuran expressed confidence that Gonzales has the tools to be a world champion someday. ??He has the fighting heart and the strength. Certainly, Berto is one of the top prospects of Pinoy boxing,?? said Anuran. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dennis U. Eroa. ![]() |
