ASENJO VOWS BEST PERFORMANCE Mexico City, April 29 - The Philippines' Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, rated No. 1 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) vowed today to give his best in his first attempt at the world miniflyweight title being held by Mexican champion Raul "Rayito" Garcia. Asenjo easily made the 105 lb. weight cap during a public weigh in in Foro Polanco, Mexico City today. Accompanied by ALA Boxing Promotions vice president Dennis Canete, Braveheart trainer Bruce Lerio and cutman Jeff de Guzman, Asenjo exuded confidence after sizing up his 28-year-old opponent. "I know he will run around the ring but I will catch him," the 21-year-old farmer's son from the town of Pigcawayan, North Cotabato said. Garcia holds a record of 29 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw with 17 knockouts while the younger Asenjo has posted 20 wins, 2 losses and 16 knockouts, indicating that the challenger is the power puncher of the two protagonists. After the weigh-in, Asenjo feasted on "nilagang baka" cooked by no less than his manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol who was allowed by the manage of the Casa Inn Hotel to cook Asenjo's food inside the hotel room. "The food outside is very oily and we decided to cook Asenjo's food here," said trainer Bruce Lerio who has been with Asenjo since they left North Cotabto a month ago to train in the ALA Gym in Cebu City. Lerio said that with a little rest, Asenjo will be in his top shape tomorrow. "We never had a problem with the weight. In fact, I allowed him to eat lightly even the day before the weigh in," Lerio said. Asenjo said he will dedicate his fight tomorrow to his family in Pigcawayan. He has promised his father that he will buy him a piece of land to farm from his prize money. |
