FIL-AM VILORIA STAKES HIS WBC LIGHT FLYWEIGHT TITLE
By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 09 Feb 2006
FILIPINO-American Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria stakes his World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight title against Jose Antonio Aguirre on Feb. 18 (Feb. 19 in Manila) at the Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
It will serve as an appetizer for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title clash between reigning champ Antonio Margarito and Manuel Gomez.
The boxing event will be aired by Solar Sports starting 10 a.m.
Viloria, 25, captured the title with a sensational first round knockout win over another Mexican Eric Ortiz last Sept. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.
The fighter from Waipahu, Hawaii will be defending his belt for the first time. He is undefeated in 18 fights, 12 coming inside the distance.
Aguirre is by no means a patsy.
He knows what it takes to win a title being a former WBC minimumweight champion himself.
The 30-year-old has a professional record of 33-4-1 with 20 KOs. One of his victims during his reign in the minimumweight is Filipino Manny Melchor.
Aguirre’s camp also has an axe to grind against Filipinos. Aguirre, by the way, is managed by Eric Morales, the same guy who was demolished by Manny Pacquiao.
But Viloria is unlikely to have a rough evening. Not with kingmaker Freddie Roach overseeing his preparations.
