Alcos stops Rodrigo in 6th round; Mepranum TKOs Verdejo

PhilBoxing.com

MAASIM, Sarangani Province - World-rated Julius Alcos finally showed his killer instict by stopping Jojo Rodrigo in 2:25 of the sixth round on Saturday night in the main header of the "Bakbakan sa Maasim" at the Maasim gym here The 21-year old Alcos, ranked International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 14 junior flyweight contender, survived the dirty tactics of Rodrigo, who suffered a deep cut on his right eyebrow in the third round.

After absorbing left-right jabs, Alcos answered back with his own barrel of punches that forced Rodrigo to pull the left leg of Alcos and throwing him down on the canvas. But that did not stop Alcos from targetting Rodrigo's nasty cut with jabs and hooks in the bloody fifth round.

In the next round, Rodrigo showed his disappointment as he tried now to wrestle Alcos by carrying the two legs of his opponent from Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte. Alcos, however prevented it by landing body and head shots forcing Rodrigo to quit in the 10-rounder bout.

Alcos, also ranked No. 10 by the World Boxing Federation (WBF), received a golden trophy from birthday celebrant Mayor Anecito "Jojo" Lopez Jr. Lopez, 44, got a nice gift when his ward Richie Mepranum stopped Rommel Verdejo of Surigao in 29
seconds of the third round.

The 18-year old Mepranum, a six-time amatuer gold medalist, improved his pro record to 4-0 with three knockouts. Daniel Solis and Harry Cahapon, both of the Willie Neri Stable knocking out their rivals in the undercard.

Solis remained undefeated by stopping veteran Edwin Talita in 2:20 of the fifth round by a technical knockout, while Cahapon pummelled to submission Dodong Dumagat in 1:53 of the second round. -- Lito delos Reyes

Apa-ap's stablemate and comebacking ex-PBF title-holder Ariel Austria, however, bowed to Jaime Acerda by a unanimous decision. "Nawala na talaga ang dating bilis at lakas ni Austria," said Jimmy Mata, officer-in-charge of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).
